fantastic color combination and composition, too bad the bird is out of focus but you grab an opportunity like this with both hands. These little fellas don't give you time to setup a tripod:)

Hey John!
Actually the center of focus is not the blue but the fat pod he's perched on (to his left). That's it? You're right . . . the cheeky lil guy just would NOT cooperate!

Thanks Lisa. I've seen them perched a few times but usually VERY high in our front yard tree. This was the first time I scoped a low one (at the LA zoo)!

You nailed it Onie . . . I had to move as the shot was blocked and given the timing -- I shot and missed (just a hair to the right would have NAILED this . . . ) but I liked it anyway!

You're right, of course. Niet opzettelijke Riny! Ik werd ook opgewekt. Ik had een seconde om mijn positie te veranderen EN te schieten voor hij verliet. Mijn doel was van.

Well said Jacques . . . I know the focal area is left of the bird and on the bird of paradise plant. Never-the-less . . . I like the shot. And the lil buggers are just soooo fast. He lit for a second and I scrambled to get an angle and a shot. In my excitement . . . I missed. But still . . . It's kinda' cool!

And so to the hummingbird. My problem with this one is that the centre of focus seems to be on the paradise plant, specifically on that lefthand blue bit. The bird itself seems a little indistinct to me, and is definitely not playing to the camera.

A lovely moment and great colours, but... hey-ho!

I've never seen a Hummingbird at rest - I didn't actual know they do that.

I figured those wings never stopped even at rest.

To bad he wasn't faving forward for this one. Regardless, a rare site indeed.

LOL...top hat and spats, very Fred Astaire...perfect for a little tap dancing my friend!

Love the dof, vibrant color, and your comp/crop. I might have tried to get rid of the spikey leaf(?) bottom right...IMHO a teeny bit distracting. As for the clarity, well...it IS a hummingbird for God's sake, what do you expect...he's gonna sit perfectly still while you focus?...sheesh. But hey, who am I to critique a moving (well, he was a second ago) bird shot...

Take care...Robin

ps...how goes the Pill Bug racing research?

Doyle -- The colors here are worth the price of admission on this picture. Eye candy!
When I was in California last year I tried and tried and tried to capture these little guys that were hovering around trees and plants where we were staying and never came up with one decent shot.

Doyle...:)))

Two beautiful birds together... ~~GRIN~~ Actually, more than two, but who's counting...lol...

Agree on the humming bird being a little out of focus, but, given the speed of the bird and the chance of getting such a great shot while it was resting on the BoP... MAGIC SIR...:)))

Onie...
