Pat, I can see what you were looking for with the tonal restriction! It is tough to pull off in flat light without seeming muddy. Perhaps some experimentation with lighting might get you the right formula?

Clive - Many thanks for your input. Prior to posting I tried changing brightness and contrast, but I simply like the look. You are right though.

G'Day Pat, Not a bad portrait but it is lacking in tonal values. It really needs some adjustment in an editor.
I would suggest that by adjusting with the levels command first then try to get more tonal values by adjusting with the curve command.

Here, is my adjusted copy but I also enhanced the lips just to give them a little more contrast.
