Thanks for the comments Kara. Yes, it is two shots. I feel I should have made that more obvious. I agree, without the cry of the loon a significant component would be missing from the experience of a visit to our lakes.

All the best.

Wonderful shot (or is it two shots that are stitched together?). I don't think I've ever seen a baby loon before. I love going on canoe trips and hearing their mournful cry.

I used to see loons when I lived in Burlington, ON in the winter, but they stayed far from land, unlike ducks and geese. I guess they fly back up North in the spring to have their chicks there. It must be quite a sight (and sound). Looking forward to your next loon pictures :)Ina

Thanks Ina for the nice comments. Often the chicks ride around on the mother's back. As I said in a earlier post I'm hoping to get a good shot of that this summer.

Best regards,
Joe

Amazing capture of the loon family, I've never seen a chick before, and had no idea they were brown! Great natural poses, and wonderful bird photography, Joe!

Thanks Yamil for viewing and your comments.
Of course these shots were taken last summer as the lake is now frozen solid and the loons have headed south. In the summer there are lots of loons in our lake. Most bays have at least a couple. Next summer I hope to get a good shot of a mother loon with her chick(s) riding on her back.

Have a great day.

Awesome capture Joe,
I have to wait at least another month to get my loons in Elkhorn Slough.
If you go on a kayack, you'll be amaze how close you can get.
Thank you for posting this shot.
