i figured that was the isue. shutter speed. you want to adjust your shutter speed so that it opens and closes faster. so you wont get over exposure from the snow.
the night shots since i dont have a tripod yet, so i brace the camera and ushualy take about 15 of any shot to ensure i get a clear one with no blur from moving. and i do the oposite with the shutter. delay the opening and closing to expose the shot to as much light as posible. :)

I haven't done snow shots in quite a while. I seem to remember needing to make an adjustment of some sort to compensate for the glare of the white in daylight shots.
How did you do your nighttime shot? Was this done with a tripod? Any filters -- you got a great effect on the streetlights.
