The image you have posted above is better than the ones that have been lightened. (IMO) The posted version's rich darkness adds to the imposing aggressive nature of the image. The world is not always bright daylight.
I know a lot of people prefer light, bright images for everything they do. Each to their own I guess. Just for a little conformation of your own original image, go and check out an Autocourse Formula 1 Calendar and compare your image in terms of darkness. You might be surprised.

Lightened it a bit, trying not to blowout the highlights and lose detail in the scarred retaining wall in the background.

The image is a little dark because it was shot at sunset. I'll add a little exposure in PS and see how it looks but the background may blowout.
