About This is a section from a panorama that was intended to be wrap-around (360 degrees) but I only took five of the six shots necessary (duh!). It didn't work as a panorama, of course, but I quite like this segment. I tone-mapped the original 16-bit image to 8-bit JPEG to get the wide dynamic range needed. Apart from the too-grey sky, I think it works pretty well...

Thank you. The edges of the roofs of the pagoda are actually slightly curved, so I don't think this is actually distortion. But there also may be a bit of optical illusion going on with all those radiating straight lines... good observation!

That's great to use flags for balancing composition of the picture. The root of the temple seems distorted ... is it some kind of optical illusion ? ;)

The tone mapping went real well, great depth and perspective with alsmost a 3-D like effect. 7
The details in the building and trees are great.
Cheers, Rob.

Thanks, Doyle! The Usefilm panorama size is the last thread that keeps me linked to Usefilm... If you use software to stitch panoramas, it has to warp the images even if you are using a rectilinear (i.e., non-fisheye) lens, so it's not all that different if you switch over to fisheyes. Well, less stitching, of course, which is why I switched! The fisheye look, itself, can give you good images though it soon gets gimmicky if you overdo it. I love my Nikon fisheye even though it was eight times the price of my Russian Zenitar fisheye!

Wow Roger . . . this shot does rock. Ya MUST see it in the panoformat to truly appreciate it though! Non-Donors are (as we say SOL)! I gotta tell ya, too . . . I like the gray sky . . . gives it a rich and realistic feel that accents the oriental red quite nicely. The ground texture and focal clarity are spot-on! Still stitching with the fisheye though . . . which I stand in awe of. Do you use distortion correction during the stitching process (which would make some sense) or stitch after the images are corrected? Great stuff Roger . . . one of a kind!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Roger,

I understand what you mean 100%. I've been a member for about a year, and in the last few months, critical critiques seem to have gone away a fair amount. I fear that it's eaither people that just post for award, or there are pirates out there looking for stock images for their spam email yarns.

YOu do very fine work my friend! please don't stop posting your amazing panos! I can understand (from my day job) how much work you put in to your images. They are always a visual treat!

all the best! post somemore! :) ...and i'll try and do the same ;)

cheers,
-Joel

Wow, Joel, you certainly know how to encourage someone. I've been feeling rather disenchanted with Usefilm recently, and reluctant to post pictures, but you may just have kick-started me. I have some pretty good recent panoramas (though I say it myself). I redid the one in Critiquer's Corner so that the main temple gate is not cut in two and it looks a lot better. May post that one if I can get around to it...

Roger,

This is great! I love the balance, and the look of a painted picture. If that blue were pushed to white, this would have an even more painterly balance..so make the grey work for ya ;)

It's such a great image! I keep going back to it, and get pulled in to whatever feels good to view at that time.

well done! great pano, and for anyone reading this far, do yourself a favor, and open up the full image to take this one in!

cheers,
-joel
