I guess I know little about this type of photography but I feel your peers are being a bit harsh on your composition Don. Given the time you have to compose and that you are sitting in the water with, I assume, the water pulling you back into the face of the wave I think this is amazingly spectacular!
regards, Graham-Landlubber-Jones :)

Excellent image with superb detail - up to the dirt picked up by the wave (would never take it out!). I see you have a few of these - awesome! For this one I agree with Joe to have less beach and more wave - thats where the interest is. Great work my friend!

Fish shape - not 'first' shape. Can't revise once posted.

You are floating in the water to get this? This is really not about the barrel, but the first shape with the barrel as its 'eye'. And the interesting bit is the water/plume over its 'head'. I might have preferred more shown at the top, then, and a vertical presentation, cropping some of the distorted shoreline at the left.

Hey don, being a surfer i'm a barrel man :) And it's purely for that reason that i think this would have been way better if you were positioned slightly more to the right and looking out more, so you have more of the barrel in frame and still some of the beach.. make sense? Anyway thats just one of many opinions :)
And since EVERYONE is doing it thse days, maybe just a bit of Ps work to clean up those, scratches? or bits of whatever in the wave face. Other than that dude you've got a pretty good shot! i'm still trying to get one with a nikonos V and 35mm lense (def not the right gear i know - but u use wat u got) and i know how tough it is!
