This has the markings of a good nature photo. However I find that the dead space to the right and in the foreground make the image more static that it needs to be. I would crop the right side to within a few feet of the elk's rear, and I would crop the foreground a little as well. This would push the Elk away from that static central placement, leading the eye from the Wapiti into the scene behind. My taste would have it even more to the side than the traditional 1/3.

Here's what I came up with in photoshop. I adjusted levels and curve, cropped and sharpened. The blown-out rock face in the center is still a problem, though the original scan may have more detail. I've sacrificed the foreground in the interest of retaining a rectangular frame. However a vertical composition might work well also.

This is a 10 point Roosevelt Elk in early October overseeing his herd. Rut hasn't started yet but its not far off.
