About ...the fun is getting there! :)

A "contact sheet" of a shoot I did at the Great Sand Dunes National Monument a long time ago with this girl that a few years afterward became my better half.
(I guess she liked the photos.) :)

It is still fun too!!!

Hi Derek! You've come across a great idea...I'll use those 8x10s and cover up some holes in the wall. Save on having to paint the wall too!

Glad you like it, I'll try to catch up on some comments this evening....
Cheers,
Kes

Kes, I've missed you you crazy bastard. I really like this one. I think you could do a collage on a wall of this and it would look awesome. It almost doesn't matter what the little pictures are you have them displayed in a very cool way. I feel like i should be matching them up like that game where you have to remember which face is under which card!

Hi Hugo - Thanks!

The sepia tones were digitally added post process and the bluish shots are the result of a C41 developing process....or so I seem to recall.

This was an experiment with a feature in Picasa2...and the sequence was pretty much the order in which they were saved on disk, which in some cases resulted in putting a strip of scans from negatives in a row. They were saved in the order of their scan.

Unfortunately the program won't allow you to edit the shots around after compilation, or I almost certainly would have changed some things. However, I would have most likely still kept the arrangement by tones. If I tried to get creative and randomly place the variously toned shots it would in all probability end up looking like a checkerboard!
:)

Best regards,
Kes

Hi Kes,

This works very well - the different poses and expressions add to the appeal of this photo. The consistency is nice - can't really find one that stands out, which I consider a very good thing in this case. I do feel a bit ambiguous about the different tones - any particular reason for that? I would intuitively expect a consistency in either black and white, the cooler blue ones or the warmer red photos, or see them mixed up a bit more. I guess that's also what makes this photo intriguing. Luvvely lady, though. Very good series.

Cheers,

Hugo

Same as me Kes,
I have all my negatives going back to the late sixties.
I have most of my prints and slides as well. One thing that I have only just touched the surface of is our family archive shots that were taken by my dad and others dating back to before WWII. A lot of those small prints or negatives really come up interesting when scanned. I did actually post a couple of old shots from the early to mid fifties that I recently scanned and re worked in Photoshop.
I'm with you on shooting some more film. My old Nikkormat FTN is still in great shape.

Thanks Eb, I was playing with picasa2 and found this effect. Oddly, less images compiled results in more apparent grain....so I put in a bunch!

Thanks Jinggoy. :)

You can certainly shoot film, judging from your thoughtful compositions. One thing about digital, it has, IMO, driven prices of used film cameras down. However, today's news was of Kodak losing money...especially in it's analog divisions. :(

Don't put it off too long, Jinggoy!

all the best,
Kes

Yes, it's great fun scanning the old negs, Andre. I'm so glad to be a pack rat...never threw them away! :)

That might be a good reason to shoot a few with film from time to time - just to have some negatives in the future.

Ray, there is about 5 rolls of 120 film in my fridge...

...and after that, I just don't know. The D80 is working pretty well. Maybe I'll save the film cameras for a couple of years when the D80 is obsolete! :)

Great story Kes, I think you had her at "click".
Very good collage you've done here. Something that will certainly make your "better half" proud. Learning to shoot film would be one of my future plans.
Well done!

Hi Kes,
From the looks of the contacts, I would think that the portrait on the third row down, second from the right would be a great one for a digital redo.
I'm sure you are finding the same thing as me. The world of digital can really bring back some great memories. It's like we have a second chance to improve on images that we loved years ago.
I have quite a few from the early 70's that I had a great time re-doing in digital.

I remember my days with emulsions and blazing away at this that and whatever......so very expensive my friend, Unlike you I took off the old and put on the new and only shoot digital these days......I miss the old days but I've burnt my bridges and I live with it fairly contentedly. It pleases me that you like others I know of will continue to exercise their film cameras....Well done to you my good friend...All the best.....Ray

Thanks Txules, that's interesting about the orange half. :) I'll have to ask my wife if that phrase is used in her Mexican dialect of Spanish. I'll be looking for your shot my friend!

Thanks Ray! That's the great thing about digital (well, some say great:) ) - you can loosen up and take some chances where with film you are somewhat restricted by the cost. I took about 3 rolls on this shoot, and that seemed like a lot!

Hi Robert

Thanks for the wonderful comment! I also like the photo you mention. It took me 16 years to see the fatal flaw in it!

Her wind blown hair, pose, expression and the environment hold attention quite well, as just recently it occurred to me that the photo does not present her with legs below the knees! As she has legs below the knees, this really bothers me now! Ha! Too funny for not having noticed this for so many years.
:)

What an excellentand original idea to present us with the whole shoot my dear Kes and a chance to see more of Mrs Kes. She is a stunning looking girl my friend and little wonder that you fell for her. There are some beautifully composed portraits there, well done to you my friend.

I had another shoot with little Sophie and sister Amy yesterday and took way over 100 shots. The penalty was that their mother couldn't make up her mind which ones she liked and the screen viewing took forever:) :) My very best wishes to you as always......Ray

Hi my friend! What a lovely exhibition from your
beauty wife, very well composed collection. Original
idea, well captured and toning work. My favorite one
is the upper line third piece. If you have bigger
shot from it please share us 'cause very powerful
and expressive work. However this is great idea and
lovely sharing your perfect works. Wonderfully done.
7+++

Have a nice day dear Kes!

Thanks Paul! Way back when I did this sort of thing with some regularity, my preference was to give the client a set of small prints for review rather than a contact sheet. And of course there would never be an unflattering shot in the bunch! :)

Cheers,
Kes
