Very pretty. I had a look at both. The difference is somewhat subtle but does make a difference overall. Little things do mean a lot. Congratulations on DOD.

It is hard when there is a struggle between reality and the artistic license. Sometimes when looking at images posted I wonder just how much post processing work there is done to some images - especially with clouds. I think it's wonderful when someone is in the perfect moment to capture an image, but I often times wonder was it that beautiful or some CS2 work.

The image is beautiful - as usual. Out of everyone on usefilm you really are one of my favorites. You're a wonderful photographer!

And I LOVE remixing other people's work. Let me know if you would ever be interested in trading shots sometime.

Michael Kanemoto Michael Kanemoto   {K:22115} 10/26/2006
Rob:

After a lot of deliberation over the years, film and digital:

- The dynamic range of the eye is much wider and more impressive than a camera. I do my best to bring the image back to what I remember.

- Working off of memory, I'm really artistically liberated to make the image to what I remember emotionally as well as scientifically - and that makes the work art, not science. This reminds me of Fuji's approach to film: they boost the reds and yellows because people remember colors more vividly than they are in real life.

- Each photographer sets their artistic boundaries. I take the Ansel Adams approach. Even he really manipulated the hell out of his negatives for the maximum visual impact. He even on very rare occasions added and subtracted items from scenes. I make this a rare case for art and try my best to maximize the potential of the shot and only on very rare occasions will dork with the material (like blending in gaps from a photostitch for example, killing dust specks, etc.)

- Your own visual style is up to you - but think it over and make this your own. I tend to go for what I think is the best scene in my mind. My overall objective is to make shots so beautiful it moves people to get out there or at least protect what we have. To that end I will make images that shine. I'll eat criticisms to the end for this, but the world is beautiful and should be celebrated, and if I need to lean on tools to make my cause more appealing, then there it is.

---- a highly caffinated Michael ----

Thanks a lot Mom!!! Yep...I have to agree with what you said wholeheartedly. I was telling them I have a shot that looks very similar to what he'd done but decided not to upload that version because it didn't reflect what I saw. I have struggled with reflecting reality vs. artistic license when I jumped into photography and I continue to deal with it...LOL! But...I still prefer reflecting reality as much as I humanly can. :)

Thanks Jim!! That's one heck of a compliment! I have never done workshops; not quite good enough yet to do something like that...you'd probably laugh if you saw how I shoot. I don't have everything memorized with f-stops and shutter speeds and ISO settings. I know generally what I need to be at to achieve what I looking for but I usually have to take a few shots before I get it exactly where I want it; thank god for digital! LOL

Thanks Lisa!!! :) Just as I was saying to Michael...I had a shot very similar to his but opted to reflect reality vs. artistic license...I very much struggle with that when I working with my shots in CS2. What do you think?? I have struggled since the beginning with it. :( LOL!

Thanks for the remix Michael...I don't mind them at all...a lot of times I get inspired. I had a version very similar to what you've done here but decided not to upload it; struggled with the decision...reflect reality or artistic interpretation. I struggle with that on ever shot for the most part. :)

nice rework Rob, the greatest things about critiques is this: you can see error that by yourself you didn't see..
Congratulations for DOD, it was surely a great landscape...

Jan Graziano   {K:17920} 10/26/2006
Congrats on your DOD award - well deserved. Michael did an excellent job brightening the whole shot and "popping" the colors which put some "zing" into the scene. I like your's better, as I believe that is what the scene actually looked like in person. I know you prefer to present your shots as closely as possible to what you actually saw. In your shot I saw no evidence that there was sunlight shining down on anything. Michael's re-work appears to put bright light into a scene where there wasn't bright light.

I do like the image, but I like the reworked image that Michael uploaded in his post below. The whole image seems to come to life with all the changes that he made.

Hey Rob:

I used quickmask over the foreground reflection, midground trees and hills, and spot masked certain areas, using levels to bring out highlights and contrast through the image. Also hit the color balance to remove some blue, then increased saturation a bit.

Nice shot Rob, I'm jealous. I can only wish to get to such an awesome place. Love the Rockies and this has a great use of foreground perspective. My only gripe is I wish the light was a little better (a little less shadows). Don't get me wrong, the shot is a stunner no less!

Cheers, -mm
