The important part is to enjoy them, Mary, and I think you got that down. ;^)

Oh, I have a lot to learn about birds. I enjoy watching them at the feeders here. But Paul is really the one who knows who they all are and info about them. I'd better pay closer attention.

An excellent setting for him, Todd! You've composed this one nicely with the bird on the branch and his reflection.
Dave.

Mary,

The eye thing is not specific to these birds. In the animal kingdom, as a rule, predators have their eye in the front of their heads so they have depth perception, prey have their eyes on the side of their heads so they can see 360 degrees (more or less). I think these guys are probably both predator and prey.

That is truly interesting. I never knew that about the eyes. How fascinating. I'm glad you explained.

Hi Mary,

It was a little chilly that day. He is intent on something, me. Because their eyes are on the side of their head, this is how they look directly at you. What I like to do in these situations is take a few pictures from a safe distance, then try to get closer and see what I can get. This guy had his eye glued to me as I approached, then he slipped away into the water.

I was just glancing to see what might be new in postings and saw this one. He looks like he quite intent on something, or is he just trying to ignore you--;) Great shot, Todd. As usual, your eye for composition is marvelous. But, oh, this looks cold--a reminder that winter is on the way. Time to pull out the woolies.
