Yes, it definitly needs some lighting. That's one trick in PS I can't seem to get right though. I'm pretty new to PS.

killer shot! if you want try shadow highlight in Photoshop CS. this does wonders for dark images

Ah, that did brighten him up a bit. Thank you. I'm new to photoshop, so I'm still trying to figure some of this stuff out. Thanks for your help.

Nice view of a red tailed hawk with dinner. Your meter was fooled by the bright background and hence the subject is underexposed, with weak contrast. That part could be improved in photoshop. Focus is a little soft, perhaps because of the telephoto stretch. Appended is a photoshop CS variant of your pic, hope you don't mind. I adjusted levels and curves, boosted color saturation and sharpened, then cropped a little.
