Just speaking to it as a photo, it's not a bad composition, but I don't think I'd have feathered the edge of the frame. And this might call for a software hack, shooting one focused far, in layer 1, one photo focused near in layer 2, and using a gradient to blend the two into one image. A large diffuser (even homemade) might help on the lighting, as well.
