About Security guard on duty at the National Gallery of Art. I thought the lighting and stance with the highlighted walkie talkie made for an interesting composition in this age of national security.

Wouldn't you be surprised if this ended up in the National Gallery of Art? This is so "alter-like", and the black and white starkness of it really lends itself to the impact. For me, it is his gun highlighted, not the radio, that tells the story.

Awesome stuff... I really like how the depth of the shadow reflect on the bright lighting from the outside.

The shadow of the guard's walkie talkie and the ornaments of the window really adds to the details of the photograph in which it was taken. As well the ornaments from the window and the shadow of it really framed up the guard in the centre picture.

Susan:

Thanks - I went with the B+W image because it forces everyone to see the image as a basic graphic composition. This one has really high contrast to provide bright whites and dark blacks - really punches out the image but also gives it a little bit of confrontational edge for the subject matter.

Also, the guard is centered in the middle of an evenly framed door - centering makes objects static and very solid. This added with the arms on the table makes for an almost sculptural guard. A position of strength and integrity, but also one of immobility.

The only detail that is not part of the reflected composition is the handset radio and sign - which illuminates the shape rather well and I think brings out the viewer's attention.
