About This is the first of a series I've just begun titled "Poverty in America"

I met this woman last sunday, as I was taking pictures of a couple pigeons under the train tressle. She noticed me with the camera and sternly announced that I should not even think about taking her picture. I assured her that I would do no such thing and proceeded to chase the pigeons some more. After a few minutes of this she had changed her mind and asked very politely if I could take her portait... I agreed

She took me back to this corner to show me where she sleeps, a half empty water bottle and a few blankets were her only possesions. She was quite self conscious of the scars on her legs so I suggested she cover them up with her blankets.

this is Gloria

This is simply wonderful. I live close to Columbus, but never get to visit downtown very often. I so deeply wish I could just take portraits like this. It's what I love photographing the most, people. Congrats on the shot!

Well David,
the project you began is a real project I think,
and about the shot, it's really great and I congratulate you for the award too, but if I was there, I may wanted to take a clear close up of her with her place in background, that would be more accurate demonstration for her poverty, but, as I have told you, this shot is absolutely perfect,
bests regards,
Mohammad

Great shot. I like the story you told us about this photograph, that speaks about Gloria and poverty in US. I hope you'll not take photos of pigeons but other poor people to make the real journalism shot...

This is a great journalistic shot. The tone and composition definately portray Gloria's living conditions. I really like that you have her name, her permission to take her portrait, and posed the shot so effectively. It makes it much more personal and caring than a randon shot of nameless someone in the same position as Gloria.

Congratulations, a very powerful photo...I look at it and am immediately drawn into it...Why are her legs scarred?..Why is her life where it is today?...Why does she hide? Photos like this one show truth and hopefully move people to ask the same questions and help. Well Done!

This is a great photojournalist style image! For me being new finding it was just a lucky break. Having her standing in the corner was a good decision as you have strong lines of the walls directing the viewer to acknowledge Gloria. How many of us look elswhere and pass right on by.Thank you David

Sad story and moving photo… I always thought it’s very important to get in touch with the person you want to photograph because they aren’t simple subjects and sometimes our photos are the best thing in their day, I like the way you composed it and the mood you are showing off, just waiting the next shots. Best regards, Max

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique This is photography! i can't believe 12 members before me viewed and couldn't be bothered to leave a comment...hopefully they are not the type to walk by Gloria without as much as a hell'o...
Congrats for your series idea and this first image conveys what is important...any of us could be in her position at any point in our lives...
Great composing and i like her position within the framing...
I wanted to do similar for a book in the style of Dorothea Lange, but recently found out there are several already out there and i couldn't afford to travel as much as i wanted to..
i will keep an eye out for others in your series
regards,gayle
