About A wet (living) cave, close to Ballots Bay - directly above the high water mark. This image was taken in almost complete darkness. I had no torch to assist me to focus and the only flash I had was the built-in flash on the D70. I had no tripod either. I know its not perfect but am uploading it to demonstrate what can be achieved with the minimum equipment and a bit of patience.

This is a very rich image!!! Stupendous gradations of colours and unbelievable patterns...plus the bats!It could be a great inspiration to a painter - frozen primeval forceas.I like it very much!

Thanks fr the explanation Joggie - very VERY interestingplace. I'm amazed - have holidayed at Victoria Bay and have never even thought of trying to go to the West - I assume you walk past the last house to get there - or maybe over the top. Thank you for sharing that - the caves really have a touch of Cango Caves in them!! Well done.
Regards
Shirley

Hi Eb - The winged creatures are bats. There is a small opening of about half a meter high by 4 meters in width through which one enters the cave. From the opening it slopes steeply up inside the cave with the result that once you are inside the chamber a little bit of light filters in but its low and do not light the roof and higher side walls at all. All I could see were faint outlines of the bigger structure in the left of the picture. You should know that through the D70 viewfinder its not even visible. Here's what I did. I had all the setting on manual, the lens zoomed to its widest and the speed/fstop set at an approximate speed that would work. Aimed into the dark and shoot, then adjusted the focus and settings according to the results which I could see on the LCD screen. Took several shots before I got the combinations right and the scene in focus. The autofocus with assist light was useless (too faint and subject too far). I plan to go back there with a tripod and proper flashlights. Regards.

Despite your explanation, I'm still not sure how you did it - other then assume that it was a very slow shutter with flash. Lots of interesting detail. Are the winged creatures bats or birds?

Hi Shirley - Ballots Bay is a small private beach directly west of Victoria Bay - the cave is on the coast, about 1.5km west of Ballots Bay in the Ballots Bay Wildlife sanctuary. It is very secluded and difficult to reach because high tide cuts of the access route, giving one a daily window of about 2 hours to explore. Regards.
