Can't forget this image now that I have a grandson this age waiting for his father to return from Afghanistan. 10th Mn. Rangers 2nd combat tour. Marking it a fav!

A very serious face for this young soldier but good to see he takes his duties with such devotion. Well done sweet Sheila I love the dof to this as it creates an almost 3D effect. Sorry I am late commenting....my work does tend to get in the way. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray

Sheila: Hugo clued me in to this (Bless him--I LOVE it) "The unsharpen mask is a Photoshop filter, (filters > sharpen > unsharpen mask), but that doesn't differ much. Anyways, USM will increase the contrasts and brightness of the pixels around the largest colour differences. If you apply too much, you will notice white halos around those edges, So you need to play around with it a while. I usually use a setting of a radius of 1.5, and a threshold of around 25-75, depending on the size of the image." Hugo's help led to me playing around with it and it has helped though I use different numbers. Also . . . turn up the saturation a tad when you upload because it will make the image look better - it get's toned down a hair when it's uploaded. I usually set the sharpen to light although Hugo told me it only mattered with the panoramic images. Hope this helps. Hugo de Wolf sent the email to me at the address in my profile. If you have any questions, feel free to send an e-mail.

Thanks Doyle! I only just recently got PS (Elements 4.0) and am really just starting to figure things out. I would love it if you could explain how to use the unsharpen mask on this photo.
Thanks! Sheila

Thanks Susie! I haven't tried selective sharpening on the eyes before. I would for you to explain it to me. My e-mail address is ccandred@comcast.net.
Thanks! Sheila

Sheila: This is a really great portrait with a perfect setting and composition. The DOF is perfect. Susie makes a point about the eyes . . . They're important. I would consider the unsharpen mask in PS since it doesn't add the noise that shapening does and is much more subtle. This is one good shot though . . . the expression is 100% natural!

Very nice expression Sheila. Almost complete wonder there... Have you ever tried selective sharpening on just the eyes? I took this in PS and sharpened them a little and it really adds some pop to the photo in my opinion. Just my 2 cents! (If you've never tried it I can email you some quick instructions.) I love your composition with the buildings out of focus in the b/g. Nicely seen. Susie

Very good candid portrait of this handsome child. The blur of the background allows the child to pop out of the frame.
