In regards to the DOF, it is a good though, and believe me I tried.
I took a ton of these shots and can tell you that what you are seeing is about the maximum DOF. This image was taken with a telephoto and extension tubes. When you put those two items together and are focusing at close to the minimum distance, you get very little DOF.

Excellent shot. I wonder how it would look if you had longer DOF. This would give viewer more area to "look" for main item on the picture. Maybe it would show how well frog blends in. Just a thought.

There were two of these frogs (that I could see) in a pond at a macro workshop I went to. I took about 20 minutes to sneak up to the edge, and than I stayed about 30 minutes waiting for the sun to break through the clouds. The frog came up about 5 times in my view, each time for about 1 minute.
