Wow! A great shot Dave and well named.
The rust seems to tone this shot well.
Very nice.

don't know if you ever get to see the Dave Letterman Show...but this looks like a great subject for his 'will it float' segment....

love this shot. i especially like the bridge in the background. it makes the boat seem more melancholy, since it won't be passing under it again.

Rusting hulks make wonderful subjects. This is a classic! I had a friend who recently passed away who used to speczalize in just such images, mostly land based though. Nice job.

On a more technical note the image looks a bit over sharpened and could use a bit of a boost in the deep shadows. If you are using PSCS2 try the Shadow/Highlight tool.

Nice depth, Dave! I like the entirely sharp foreground rendering pointing to the distant structures. Not my kind of water, 'though, but goes with the derilect boat.

Nice find, Dave! I like your composition and the cool rusty details.
In reading all the critiques, I agree that the branches don't add a lot to the shot, but it doesn't appear to me that there is a lot that you can do about that. The shot is well worth taking, branches and all!

Excellant composition Dave! This old hull is being "cradled" softly by the trees in it's final rest. The imagination soars when trying to tell the story of this boat. The sky just seems too cheerful, but maybe it's rejoicing the life that was. Super image Dave. Best regards--Bill Voizin

Dave,

I love the composition of this picture. The boat has been well photographed. It really is a shame about the background though. I don't think it adds anything to the picture. You should try experimenting with a polarizing filter to remove the scattered blue light of the sky. It will help with the green and brown tones too. This photo would have been a good candiadate for the filter.

I love old boat shots, and this is a very nice one, Dave. The composition is great. The only change I would make would be to alter the lighting and contrast so that sky is not quite so bright and that there's a little more definition to the background.

I wondered where the African Queen had got to Dave:):):)
This is a wonderful but sad mood to this lovely composition. Beautiful soft sunlight playing on those great rusty colour tones of this poor neglected boat. The shooting angle is great my friend. We can but hope that she gave a lot of pleasure to all who boarded her. Well done Dave, I think this is a lovely find and nicely composed. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray

Markus Scholz Markus Scholz   {K:23722} 4/11/2006
It is a nice image and subject, Dave. But before I really like it there had to be some things changed. E.g. the trees to the left and to the right are a bit distracting and don't add really to the composition. They are also interfering with the lines of the bridge construction. The bridge alone would give a good contrast to the boat. But the buildings to the left are also not of greart help. I know that this all is not easy to correct, but that's just my feelings.

Regards, Markus

Great shot of this old rusty boat. The colors of the wear and tear are so strinking. I love the slant of that this boat has been left at. It must have been a beauty in it's earlier day. Great find.

Dave, old boats in neglect along the shore inspire my imagination. What tales they could tell of the their adventures. You captured this perfectly.

Dave,
It looks like it's been a while since this one actually floated. This shot would probably look great in B&W. The rust and paint would convert beautifully in the greyscale. A common problem with this one is all the little distracting branches. They don't really add anything nice to the shot. I notice this kind of thing a lot because I am just as guilty when it comes to that sort of thing.

Dave, good photography, I might have allowed the background to fade out a bit (f5.6 or f4) and perhaps been inclined to give the vessel, a strong subject, more room to breath, ie, include more space around it, particularly on the left hand side but good, well exposed, interesting, good color and lines imao. cheers, david.

Delightful scene. I do love boats. This poor thing has been neglected. Good colors, light and details. I might have left a tad more room at the bottom.
