This is a good capture Shirley, but it isn't a Merel like Riny said. Merels are different birds with mail and femail not the same, and they don't have red wings or green heads.
Maybe Riny needs glasses, i'll ask him. When i capture one i'll post it.
Anyway, good sharp image with great selective focus. Thanks again for commenting my image "frog on guard". You have a nice portfolio, i'll visit it more often in the near future.
All the best,

Klaas

Hi Kath
Nope - these not considered a pest here at all. This is a female, the males don't have the grey head.
What could be regarded as a pest (invader chasing the indigenous birds from their nesting sites) is the Myna Bird - also from the Starling family but different looking. Not (yet) found throughout South Africa.
Regards
Shirley

Great focus, Shirley! Are these guys as much of a pest in South Africa as they are here?
