About
The plaque reads
The days became night and the dragon’s breath blew across the mountains destroying all in its path
During summer 2003 massive bushfires spread across north eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales and burned for six weeks. These Kurrajong trees were planted in recognition of the efforts of the locals and numerous volunteers who risked their lives to help others. They also serve as a permanent reminder of the pioneer history that was destroyed on the 30th of January in the Suggan Buggan area and the post this plaque is mounted on is what remains of Ben Boyd’s stockyards.
Its poignant indeed to me to revisit this area for the first time since I was a child of six.. nearly fifty years ago.. I left an accordant comment in the visitors book in the Suggan Buggan schoolhouse.. During those trips around NSW and so on with my parents our dad took us to many places including Eden a coastal town about 200km as the crow flies from this tiny village of Suggan Buggan, just above the NSW Vic border, where Ben Boyd built a whaling station on the shores of Twofold Bay and the town of Boydtown (now a ghost town with only the church and the Ben Boyd inn remaining) All that time I had no idea his empire or influence stretched so far south and inland as well over the rugged Snowy country.. its difficult enough to drive the Barry Way let alone cover this country on horseback.. stern people for tough times and to think it is all destroyed in a night of fire
mmm yup. Lasted all that time though but when the numbewr is up big time armageddonOh imagine escaping such a thing on horse back. Dont the leaves work magic around this.
