What I found most helpfull when doing the preliminary work of sorting through a stack of different-focus-point photos is this:
Make the copy of all the photos and rescale is to 800x600. Do a edge detect and convert to grayscale. Now you can very easily see the sharpest points of a each photo and choose the minimal number of photos to cover the target DoF. Here is a sequence of such images. You can clearly see the difference in focus point.

Now I“m undestanding well about you mean about multiple shots combination... I too difficult to get a large dof in a single shot.. I“ll study about this technic..
