Thank's to all of you for your comments I think it will be worth taking all into consideration and having another shot at it. By the way it is a copy from a 35mm slide.

John, in my opinion, this photo lacks a definite focal point. The lighter colors are over-exposed and there is too much going on in the rest of it. You shoud crop is down to just the fungi and try to lessen the exposure. Also try to get in closer for more fungi detail and less outside distractions. Keep shooting and thank you for sharing. Regards Kathleen

Garold's point is right on--at least about the brightness and contrast. The highlights are blown-out--to the point that all detail is lost in the white areas and in most of the bright yellows. The image is also oversharpened, making the twigs and other features (especially on the left) distracting. The high contrast scene you have here is one of the biggest challenges with digital equipment. The bright areas are extremely difficult to get to retain any sort of detail. Your camera averaged the exposure for the scene and that just didn't tolerate the brightest parts. When I encounter such a situation--almost never this radical, I admit--I try to expose for the highlights rather than the average. The shadow areas are easier to recover. The medium tolerates them better than the bright ones. It takes some experimentation, but for a subject this fascinating, it will be worth the effort. Best of luck, --George

Ok John I really shouldn't be one of the first to critique this shot but here goes. I think that you could have cloned out some of the detracting parts like the dark twig in bottom left. I also think that the color in the center is a little to bright in contrast to the outer edges. With all that said the photograph captures attention and shows a different perspedtive that you saw and captured under foot. Many would probably walk right over it without giving it another thought. A quote that I like came to mind when I was looking at this photo. "Mysteries lie all around us, even in the most familiar things, waiting only to be perceived." Wynn Bullock I like the photograph and I'm not sure that my observations helped any.
