About I exposed for the details in her face and blew-out the bg. How best to avoid this in the future? A polarizer filter or flash?

Sara, is my favorite model. She is generally very patient with me as I am slow/picky wrt exposures and angles. We have know each other for 17 years, since my wife and I gave birth to her. Thanks for the comment. I do agree with you it does help her face stand out.

I'm not sure that blowing out the BG was such a mistake. It made Sara's face (who is this beauty?) stand out all the better. In a way it's like the clever use of DOF.
Thank you for your very kind comment on my "Kissing cousins", Ron. I think these birds are known to immitate the human voice, but I doubt they undertand it. They were too far to hear me anyway (about 40 feet) so I just had to wait for a lucky break & they finally obliged.
Best regards,
Rafi

Yes, I think that would have been a reasonable option.

The large f number would give you a smaller aperature and greater depth of field. Exposing for the background would certainly make your subject too dark, hence the need for the fill flash.

Thanks for the advice James. I've taken multiple shots in the past under similar conditions with and w/o flash. I will check the exif later today. If I wanted the bg in focus I guess that I should have gone to apperature priority, selected a large F-stop number (F22) and used fill flash. Is that correct?

You've experienced a very common problem when photographing under a cover or awning during a bright day.

One way to avoid this, or to correct this, is to use a fill flash. Even then, you can still have some difficulty if the background is too bright.

Nice portrait work, though. Pretty girl, nice smile...just needed some fill flash.
