Hi Kathy!
Critiquers corner....Hmmmm, If I had to come up with a critque I think that I would have to agree with Kamer and Susie that I might like to see both buds in focus, or I think that Susie's idea of stepping to the left a little might work well.
On to what I really liked...the detail of the ice crystals is perfect. I really like how the background turned out dark (probably from a shallow DOF), it really makes the subject pop and your focus of the one bud is right on!

Hi Kathy...I try to stay away from the CC images, a bit intimidating for me. I do like this...both your crop and Hugo's do make a difference! Really nice detail and the frost with the green make a great combo!

If this was my image I probably would have done something similar to the improvement you made.
Maybe just a little bit more of the unfocused bud (but not all of it) Then I would cut away the top third similar to the way Hugo has done it.
Another thing that I would also like is a little desaturation to the image to take some of the sharpness out.
But, you have to remember that these are all very subjective selections and nobody has the exact right answer.
You have to admit that the close cropped versions force the viewer into the bud's world. This is the reason why I suggested only half of the unfocussed bud being in the shot. It is there for reference, but not taking equal space fighting for the main subject's attention. The same with the space above. A little space to breath is fine, but too much only distracts.
I hope that makes sense.

Hello Kathy, thank you for your comment and welcoming me back :) This is a great idea to have this Critiquer's Corner for those that want it...Wonderful addition to the site! I really LOVE your second crop much better, for me it's a very strong image with the vertical cropping. It focuses all of the attention on your frozen bud, great lighting, excellent shallow DOF, love the diagonal and just the hint of the second bud, beautiful contrasts with the dark of the background..excellent work!!

Hi again Kathy......I had the same idea as Hugo for a crop but I actually prefer your new crop showing the main part of the second bud with the lower part that is virtually in focus leading, even pointing us towards the main subject. An excellent crop from the Queen of cropping...what else is new! Well done to you Kathy, you sorted out your own problem. All the best to you sweetie....Ray

I am finally Caught up with all the events that I have been involved with over the last two months!
Let see, I got Married, Went on my Honeymoon to Hawaii, I can't wait to catch up with all of your images realy soon!
In Depth Critique huh....
First let me start off by saying that I Like this shot a lot. A few things could have made it Pop even more. IMO. Like the others a different crop....More so in the Verticle Format.
I think you have a good Dof, You could have lightened up the BG a tad, but it is fine never the less.
The diagonal you have this in a superb!
The details in the crystals and the left pod are spot on.
All in all an awesome capture.

I like the second much better. I actually had in mind exactly what Hugo suggested, just couldn't put it into words. The two (your second upload and the one Hugo suggested) would be totally different images, both very eye catching and appealing. Good job and great choice to put in CC.

I really like your suggestion, Hugo. I have just recently begun to play around with aperture, and it is finally starting to make sense. Next time I will take more shots with both small and large settings. I just shot some of cherry blossoms and used both. An amazing difference for sure!

Thanks for the reply, and I see what you are getting at. I do like this solution, and it's a very good improvement. The solution I had in mind takes a little more than just a crop; I think the two buds, and the POF itself are just what the image needs, but I would've selected a smaller aperture, keeping both in focus, still hinting at the branches behind them, but leaving them fuzzy. That would mean retaking the photo...
I've attached the crop I had in mind...

Great detail on the frost crystals and buds, Kathy! I agree a closer cropping, just to cut down on the "dead" space might make it a little more interesting shot. Very nicely done as is, though!

Fabulous shallow depth of field to this excellent shot my dear Kathy. Beautiful soft colour tones to match the delicacy of the new growth. I love the branch starting out from top left and to have one of the buds off the POF is great but I agree with Andre about the cropping, knowing me I would have cropped in close to the R/H bud. Hark at me telling the Queen of crops:):):) My own posting of today had a lot to do with DOF and out of many shots I went with the one that I LIKED BEST. Hi Kathy,
Since this is in the critiques corner, I would say that there may be too much background for the main subject. It doesn't bother me that much that one of the buds is out of focus as long as it is much closer cropped. Lets say you got in closer on the focused bud and eliminated half of the out of focus bud?

Hi Kathy, I tend to agree with Kamer. I'd love to see this photo with both buds in focus. To me, the DOF is too shallow, but I do like the frosty feel. You've captured that aspect very well. The combination of bright buds against the dark background do make them really pop off the screen. As to the composition, I also feel consising the view a bit would probably increase the impact of this shot. Nonetheless a very good photo as is!

The dof on this one really makes it pop Sissy. It's a great shot, well seen. The colors are really nice.
Let's see...critiquer corner? Hmmm...all I can think of is it might be nice to see both buds focused because they are so close to the same plane, or take the shot from more left.
I don't know, it's tough to come up with critiques on a cool image, that's just an idea. )
I really like the dark b/g and the little pattern of branches in the upper left. Good job as usual! Hope you guys had a great day.

a wide and shorter cadrage could make the image more powerful and if you can focus on both of them, the photo will be more intriguing i suppose. good details on the focused one
before opening the image i thought they were two insects fighting..
