Very good self portrait Ray, there is good detail and saturation, I think opening a half or one stop more, would have given just a bit more light. But I like it as it is. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Lisa,

you are very welcome. I Still have a lot to learn my self. The only way to learn is to shoot, shoot, and shoot. Look at you work to see where you went wrong, and try again untill you are satisfied.

Ray:
Thank you for going on a bit -- I really appreciate it! I'm going to print it out so I can read it again to understand more about what you said. The information is invaluable to me as I am just starting to learn about photography and still have soooo much to learn! Including getting myself some more equipment so I can continue to learn. Thank you for explaining things -- it helps me to learn more and hopefully someday I can be as good as you. Thanks again

Hi Lisa,
thank you for the complement. I used a Cannon G2 digital camera to take this shot, I also used my Cannon 540EZ speed light. The flash unit was the key to taking this shot, but not the only one. First of all i set the camera on a tripod, set my settings to f/4 and the suhtter speed to manual. I set my flash to bounce of the ceiling, at around 10 MHZ. (VERY SOFT LIGHT, THAT'S ANOTHER KEY) The viewing LCD screen is able to turn in many direction,( THAT'S ANOTHER KEY) I could see my self in the screen to composse the shot, i also used a remote control to focus,( another key) zoom, ect. Then fired away when i was satisfied with the compostion . I did have to adjust the flash unit a few times until i had the right amount of light. I know you use a SLR film camera, it will work also, just to set up for the shot is a bit harder, you need a prop to focus on, just to know where to stand, and focus. In your case, i would use soft light from a window, covering your face all round with even light, you don't want shadows. i do go on a bit, don't i. LOL. I hope that helps you out.

Really nice photo. How did you get it so close and so nice of yourself? I hate photos of myself and you just look so calm and collected. Nice job indeed.

Now i have heard them all, "MC Hammer". (just Hammer now)I think he would find your comment offensive. LOL. As for me, no i'm not lonely, just home sick. I lived in the UK for 19 years, after 21 years in the good old US of A, you would think i would be over it already.

Well, at first I thought it was an image of MC Hammer and I figured it surely reflects lonliness!!! But then I noticed I was wrong! Are you really that lonely? By the way, you do look a lot like MC Hammer!

HI julien,
it's not your monitor, I find this to dark also, for some reason or another, after up loading on to this site, it drops off 2 to 3 tone's darker. I think my monitor needs adjustment.I Thank you for the advice. As you so nicey put it, dark tones on light back grounds tend to underexpose, But, i do compensate for that by metering off the dark tone's to gain details. Thank you once again, Julien.

Maybe it's my monitor, but I have the feeling this came out a bit dark. Mainly in the bottom part and in the clothing where I find it hard to see textures. If you chose a bit darker background then you could expose longer without having an overexposed background (I think) and get a bit more details in the clothing and skin.

Regards,
Julien
