And thanks Hugo. I seem to have a problem, I opened a new a4 white sheet in photoshop and applied the gradient tool. Also other gradient methods. I can't get a smooth transition from white to black. Infact it's like I'd set the posterisation tool to 100 as each step to black is exactly 1%. I've never noticed this before. I'm going to try dot gain settings. Yet the original colour photo is smooth. If you or anyone has any advice I'd be gratful.
Hi Barry, Ignoring the posterisation in the sky, I'm struck (positively) by the simplicity of the scene, as well as contrast in it. Good cal of preserving the details in the black hill, and the composition, with the whiff of white clouds over the gulley is spot on. Did you also apply some vignetting? Well balanced composition, and a very appealing shot.
Just curious, what did you do to get the posterisation in the sky? That shouldn't be necessary. It does depend on what you did in the B&W conversion, as well as any other treatment. With CS2, the Shadow Highlight function does tend to create some posterisation if I apply it to vigorously.
All in all, a good shot. Simple but very effective.
