This is so odd landscape. I'm suprised.I wish that horisont were lower and that rocks weren't so exposed....but really great work! Regards from Serbia!

More width does not show the trajectory curving any better, Ian. It would be tough for me to go wider as this was with my 19mm already! I have some others I will post later that do show the final spin better. It reminded me of bowling balls curving just before hitting the pins.

Beustiful warm scene with evidence of storms. Nice bit of swish happening in the trajection of the rock leading the race (is it showing off) would more width to the shot have emphasized it? Just love the smoothed cracked honeycomb mud.

Don - thanks for taking the time to play. Your interpretation is interesting. I agree that it might be visually better, but my overwhelming memory of the place is the brightness and the light bathing everything. Whats an artist to do? Cheers. Jb

This is a beauty John.. The detail and light is very nice. You might even tone this down more and make it more dramatic. Just couldn't resist to try this. Don.

Yes, Lisa, it was. We were there the first week of February. This is the 'Paul's Photo' store of Torrance Ca, not the photographer on use film who uses the epithet of 'Pauls Photo'. FYI they will be going back next February. - JB

I've never heard about the "Race Track" at Death Valley with the famous moving rocks. Learn something new everyday.
The amount of sky in the background is perfect. The dryness of the area and the rocks makes for a very nice composition.
Was this taken at a recent photo outing to Death Valley with Paul's Photo?

Hugo - The race track is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult places on earth to photgraph in terms of lighting. Death Valley sun is sooo intense. Actually I was there at about 9 am with sunrise at 7. Optimal shooting requires you to camp nearby but there is no camping allowed at the track itself. When I was there, only one intrepid light catcher had made the effort of camping. I love the place and will be back again. Thanks for the comment. - Danke JB

Hi John, quite a surprise to see the Race Track.... I've just returned from Death Valley, and what an awesome place it is....:)
The strong point in this photo is the "racing" element, created by the four rocks, I failed to find a suitable arrangement last week, so I only got the singles.
I do fbelieve the tracks themselves could be a bit more pronounced, I believe. Also, the utmost right rock, without it's characteristic trail seems a bit out of place.
It's not an easy place to shoot, I believe. Especially during mid day, when the sun is too bright, creating either very strong contrasts or removes the detailing and feel for geometry (I noticed that in Z-point) Judging by the light, I think you shot it at the right time of day, the shadows of the rocks add a lot to the photo. (Sunset, I believe)
I think a few minutes later could've perhaps created a bit warmer tones. As there are a few whiffs of clouds in the sky, you could've also been in for a blazing sunset, too...:) But that would also inevitably mean you'd have to drive back in the dark...:)
Good shot!
Cheers,
Hugo

Interesting - between the two posts I learned something that I used to improve this image. I realized that out on the sands, the DMR in auto white balance was going cyan. So I started pulling out the cyan and they got much nicer. That being said, there is always room to critique. In this case I was wondering if the one lone rock to the upper right with no trail was spoiling anything? Thanks Roger. JB

I had one or two reservations about the earlier post. but this one seems completely fine. You should not post such great photos to Critiquer's Corner! You make it too hard to write nice long, no-holds-barred critiques...

This is a great shot. Despite the emptiness, there is so much going on: the cracked earth in the foreground, the vast expanse of desert in the middle ground and the mountains behind. Great DOF, composition and subject interest. I can't see how to improve on this... John

Great subject, the phenomena of these rock has always facinated me. I like the saturation the perspective the DOF and the focus here. Would have been a hard shot to better. Sal
