JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR features a riveting, contemporary rock score and tells of the greatest drama of all time, the last week of the life of Jesus Christ. Revealing the inspirational power of the human spirit, SUPERSTAR celebrates the healing and joyous quality of love. The enduring relevance of this perennial favorite continues to captivate audiences around the world.
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is being performed by a cast of over forty theatre students directed by theatre teacher Billy Houck. Musical direction is provided by Chris Bledsoe. The production will be accompanied by a live rock orchestra led by Adam Wilke. The production manager is Carolyn Swanson. Technical Director is Rick Pierce.
According to Houck, “I’ve been dreaming of a production of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR since I bought a copy of the record as a teenager in 1970. It was originally released as a double lp two years before it was presented on Broadway. The music filled my mind with imagery: the compassionate Christ; Judas, the angry young disciple; Mary Magdalene, the fallen woman who has learned a lesson in love; Herod, the decadent puppet-king; and the cool, collected Pontius Pilate, dispensing justice among the barbarians. Our production will take the two thousand year old tradition of the passion play and make it relevant to audiences today . The genius of the play is that it manages to be contemporary and provocative while remaining true to the original gospel texts. All the same, audiences who think they know the play may be in for a few surprises.”
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is the fourth play in an exciting theatrical year. David Ives’ ALL IN THE TIMING will be presented in May and the NEW PLAY FESTIVAL will wrap up the year in June. Tickets for all productions are available from the Clark Center Box Office at (805) 489-9444.
