Hi Marcus,
They may also be overlooked because all black birds are so hard to get right! You don't seem to have any problems getting great detail out of birds no matter the colour :)
I had some fun practicing shooting some crows using the technique you described to me a while back. It worked out not too bad, but I still couldn't get close enough for the kind of detail you have in this one.
