Thanks Ann. I know that's exactly what happened now. This image was over the size limit and I didn't uncheck the sharpening feature. So, lessons learned! I'm a lot more careful now.
Thanks for taking the time to make sure I got it...I appreciate your input so much!

Hi Susie...I did read a lot about the sharpening of this image and I don't know if you've noticed it but there is a new feature which gives you the option to allow varying degrees of sharpening to your images when uploading them. I always have mine set to "None" as I don't want any automatic sharpening done of my images. I will do my own sharpening. Anyway...you might want to check that each time you upload an image. The option is on the upload information page so make sure you check "None" if you want no further sharpening done to your images.

This is a lovely image with very nice softer tones. I do see what you mean by oversharpened but I know that's not your doing. The composition and idea is great. Very nice indeed.

Don't forget to check that option setting each time you upload.

Cheers - Ann :)

I love the composition and concept of this picture. You really have a nice touch with children photos!

I also noticed the oversharpening around the eyes, but you've already explained why it happened.

Regards,

Warren

Wonderful pose and message, Susie! I love how her face is half behind the hearts, a very symbolic image of love from a beautiful little girl! It would be great to re-enact it, although this was a candid moment, I think it is a wonderful timeless universally understandeable message. It really makes me smile when I see it! Great capture!
And great bio picture! Wow, now I really get to see you and Kathy, such a nice portrait and smile, really nice to see you! Hugs, and best of everything in 2006!

Hi Susie! I was kidding you because I knew wasn't
Your type of posting. It happens to me several times too! (Engine compression between UF and up loader). Finally I feel the most heartfelt is the commentaries feverish politically not the work but the friendship. I have seen this typicality’s all the time but now doesn't bother in me because our world is made from it. Long story short I truly commit my honestly to no mater what the cause of it!

Andre Denis Andre Denis   {K:66407} 1/2/2006
Hi Susie,
They do warn about loading larger images, but I didn't fully understand what would happen either. There is a definite difference between the first one posted and the attachment. I don't see any more of the little white jaggy spots around the eyes, eyebrows and hair. I suppose what we have to look out for when posting is to try and get as close to 360 without going over the 750x750 dimensions. I suspect that if you have an image a lot over 75x750 and it is still well under the 360 limit, that is probably the worst case scenario for posting. That kind of an image will still up-load okay, but will be drastically reduced in quality. I think the 750x750 limit is a new feature.

I'm glad I mentioned it now. I still miss that easy preview feature. I guess we can always take the image down right away if we are not satisfied with it.

Hi Harry,
If you are referring to the oversharpening, read the other comments and you will see that I have figured out what happened. I didn't realize the image size was so important on the upload. Now I do! Cheers to you!

Hi Susie, I love your composition and idea, this looks quite nostalgic as well. I noticed the sharpening too, or recognised the effect. I uploaded an image a while ago that was 800-wide and it came out sharpened like this too, which was a surprise! After I figured out what happened I deleted it, resized it and uploaded it again.

Oh! And congratulations on the editor's choice award! I saw your lovely image on the front page and regret not having the time then to write a congrats to you, but it was so neat to see your image there.

Susie OConnor Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 1/1/2006
Andre,
I found out that images over 750x750 are sharpened quite a lot. I resized and reloaded this image in my comments. I think it looks a lot different. Thanks for your critique...it will help all my image uploads from now on. I guess this is a new feature on UseFilm as well!

Susie OConnor Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 1/1/2006
I was reading in the forums and didn't realize how important the sizing is when uploading an image. I guess that images larger than 750x750 are compressed and sharpened. I uploaded this one originally at around 1000 for the height so I guess they really sharpened it. Like I said to Andre, I was shocked at the change. Anyway, I'm going to upload it again here after resizing it and see if it makes a difference. Bear with me! ) Maybe it won't look any different at all...

Hi Susie,
I try to be honest and tell it like I see it. But, at the same time, I know that so many funny things happen in compression and different graphics cards interpretations, that I hesitate to critique. The fact that I see all of your other images beautifully made me thing there might be something not quite right.

I also miss that feature with the old Usefilm format. On some of my images, I used to get a huge difference comparing what I saw in Photoshop and what I saw on the preview up-load. I used to go back and forth two or three times sometimes :)

It's one thing to be honest and another to be over critical just to be mean. I think most of us prefer honesty when it comes to our images.
Andre

Susie OConnor Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 1/1/2006
Hi Andre,
Actually I was wondering if anyone else would comment on that very thing. This image is rather soft on my computer. When I uploaded it I was shocked at how sharp and grainy it looked. I was going to add a comment about that but wanted to wait and see if anyone would comment on it. You are the winner!
I liked the former feature UseFilm had where you uploaded the image, inspected it and then added the details before posting. Some images go through a weird transition on the upload I guess.
Anyway, I wasn't all that happy with the technical aspects of this photo once uploaded but liked the overall capture so decided to go ahead and leave it on.
Thanks for your honesty...it's what I love about this site.
My best, Susie

Hi Susie,
Another great composition from you with a very charming model.
No body else has mentioned this, so I'm a little weary commenting on it. On my monitor, I am seeing a lot of what looks like over-sharpness in the eye, eyebrows and hair. This surprises me because I never see anything like this in any of your other images. Since nobody else has mentioned it, it might just be the way my old graphics card is displaying the image. Now I've got to check this one out on my son's upgraded pc.

Hmmm. When she gets a little older it looks as if she will learn to break a few hearts, too, not just draw them. Lovely shot, Susie. Keeping just the eye sharp and letting everything else around it be a little softer really works very well! Thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated.

Hi Robin,
Thanks...did you get the full version or Elements? Kathy and I took a series of 4 classes at the local community college that were really good. PS is a great program but there is definitely a learning curve! The classes demystified a few things for sure. I'd be glad to help with some little things if you get stuck. Have fun!

Great photo Susie, such a cutie...she looks proud of her work. Love the composition and I think you did a great job taking her out of the background...did you take PS classes or are you self taught? My son and his wife gave me PS for Christmas...oh boy, so much to learn...thinking maybe I should sign up for a few classes!
