About Swallowtail was born this morning from pupa.
I kept the pupa in a plastic box since 26aug 2005.
We had a sudden overnight weather change from minus 10 to plus 7 degrees Celcius and the butterfly must have thought spring is here.

They live for a week or two apparently. So beautiful and such a short lifespan! How sad! :-(! Do the best u can and after it dies, u can still keep it for years without doing much to preserve. I collected a few dead ones for a max of 5 yrs now already...I googled and found this link for u Guido! Bonne Annee a toi aussi!! http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/info/faqs/bflymoth/lifespan.htm

don't think a butterfly lives longer than a week or so.
I will keep him warm and feed sugar and sirop.
He does go for the window ,when I set him free.
The last one I had was in the summer and I let him free after taking some pics.
But now ,I will keep this one here inside and see what happens.
Got two more pupa here in the box.
We hardly see these swallowtails here,so I found a few of these caterpillars and kept them in a box.

That's a great start to a new year. Now, what do you do with the butterfly until the spring comes?
A very Happy New Year to you, also.
Mary

Uh oh!! That's trouble now! That is what Swallowtails are known to do, pupate for a whole year. I have one (of the two here attached) still as a pupa (black swallowtail) myself at home in a terrarium. I raise these too in summer but I release them as soon as they hatch. I hope this black swallotail doesn't emerge yet. Because winter just started here and it can get as cold as -20C. I guess, U can try raising him with some concentrated syrup like they do in the butterfly enclosures. Good luck! Happy new year!!
