About For those who were born before 1980, how was 1980 for you?
Sepia, Holga PS filter, etc.
Dedicated to my UF friend Mark Beltran who uses the real Holga. Thanks for the ispiration and great work, Mark!
I tried to get a stark, not too nostalgic look, not too warm, but not too cold. Somewhat utilitarian, and urban. The shot was taken yesterday at the entrance of the Hamilton, Ontario, Public Library.

Ina, somehow I missed this one and the one is a stun for me. Yes, I'm beforish and 1980 was a year of a great realization of my dreams and desires, a time I'll never forget trying tobe a frontliner for the changes and the only one prospective twist in the century meant to clear earlier aftermath of the politics and aimed to erase a divide line between the worlds. I would however prise 1968 first as a primer and the marker of the changes in politics, arts and the moods that finally contributed to a birth of the new thinking on both sides of the wall.

Ina, besides all that retrospectives you sparked, the image is great, the colors in low chromes are fantastic, the verticals and angles - realy very strong design.

Ina, it's one of the best pictures you have presented at UF.

All this matters a lot to me touching my feelimgs too close and too deep. Thanks for that Ina. Cheers, n.j

Thanks Aram! I'm glad I've "unlocked" your memories of the 80's! It seems that many of us had a better time in the 80's than in the 90's - or so is my impression. Anyway, I think the longer you go back in time, the "rosier" it becomes :)

Lovely composition of tones. As in "Art on the Run" there is a little touch of color that seems calling you from the deepest layers of sepia!

A locked bicycle is sad! Un-free like a bird!! But a locked bicycle ALONE beside a free post is too sad.

Early 80's for me was the heaven of "no responsibility": like an unlocked bicycle!

Very evocative shot of this no-nonsense two wheeled urban warrior (though it wasn't even a dream in 1980!). I like the small colors in this, set off nicely by the monochromic atmosphere. The shaprness/contrast is working with the sepia tone to create an edgy environ that is effective and also fits the mood created by the urban bike hardware. Nice choice to avoid nostalgic softness, this is more effective I think. Very nicely conceived and done!

Thanks Gyuri, I can't wait for the 1980 surprise!
I'll be back late tonight with my comments, sorry for the delay, I'm off Sundays and Mondays :-(

Very nice, vintage-atmosphere photo, Ina. A great idea with the 1980, perhaps a new project should be opened with that title. I will try to fish out a surprize for you from 1980. Warm regards, Gyuri

Thanks for your reply, Endre :) My experience was a good one in the 80's too, not so in the 90's! I can't believe 1980 was 25 years ago! Does make you wonder...

Thank you Yahya for writing. The burnout area was most likely caused by the multiple filters and manipulations. I've added an adjustment layer also for a slight rosy color on the concrete wall. This seemingly simple picture took me more time than any other! In the end I had about 20 versions, didn't even notice the burnout, it could have been a simple cloning. I read all your great comments to Mark Longo on his still life, and really liked what you did, and the good advice with lighting. I'm going to try some still lifes and will definitely pay attention to your comments!

Hi Daniel, that was my experience as well - in the 80's it was up, up, and in the 90's downhill. Funny how we remember a whole decade! See you Tuesday, and thanks for writing!

Hi Mani, I use photoshop in all my pictures, without exception. Please have a look at the "about" section - it says usually what I've done. This is a number of filters, plus an adjustment layer. Thanks for your comment!

Thank you Susie, that's exactly the mood I wanted, and I'm so glad you recognized it! Gritty, utilitarian, not romantic - kind of like the 80's - my impression of the 80's anyway. The style of brutish exposed concrete architecture was part of the look, and so were the steel posts and concrete pavers. I'm sorry I'm not up to making comments tonight, but I'll be back tomorrow night. Many thanks! Ina

Thanks Neal, as I said to Mark Beltran, this took me a lot longer than any of my color layered compositions, because it was the mood and the right tones I was after. I shall stick to color from now on! I'll be back with my comments tomorrow night, sorry for the delay :)

Wow I've never even heard of a Holga filter, but I love the effect here. It's very gritty and nostalgic. the lighting makes it look almost like a movie set or something. Very mysterious. Good job Ina.

The bicycle is so wonderfully sharp against the concrete background and the toning creates just the right mood. A very powerful image. Very well done.

wonderfull Ina.
great discussion between you and Mark about the Holga, very usefull.
concerning the photo i find it really beatifull, the bike and the concrete wall, all are great.
the little burnout area seems to bother me alittle. and it would much less rich without the HOLGA :)

I love super-sharp images, so truly, I'm using only the vignetting part. Again, I'll post one more to make it a mini-series, then I'll go back to my regular scheduled programming! LOL :)

Mark Beltran   {K:32612} 12/4/2005
I once thought these filters would make everybody's work look the same, but I was mistaken. It's incredible how you made it totally your own, but a departure from your previous works. And it sounds like we're both image flippers! LOL.

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/4/2005
Yes, it does have slide bars and I have done the vertical flip :) I thought it was just me! Thanks! What I like the best is the sepia feature with the dice. I'm combining the pin light glue with the dice, and then apply the German B & W filter. I got some amazing abstracts - fascinating stuff!

  0

Mark Beltran   {K:32612} 12/4/2005
Yes, you're right, it does that on mine also.
What I do is turn it upside down and do the same for the top half. Does the trial version have slide-bar adjustments I wonder? If it does, try adjusting the slide-bar for the clear-area or the dampen-area.

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 12/4/2005
You're welcome, Mark! This has been a very progressive decade for me.
Re: Holga filter: I think there is a tendency to darken the right bottom corner more, it seems uneven, although I've selected "centered" - I had to shift my crops to even it out.

  0

Mark Beltran   {K:32612} 12/4/2005
The whole composition is accentuated by the filter effect you used, and I like how it looks. The bike's a plus, and so is the 80's behind it. That was a great decade for art, culture and music. It wasn't perfect, but I had some great times. I feel very honored by this photograph, as if everything positive from that decade of life was infused into it. Thank you very much for dedicating this piece to me! It is very uplifting.
Kind Regards,

Mark

Wonderful 'holga-like' image.
I've been contemplating picking up a Holga - seems like they could be fun. Using PS also works well, as you've done here. I like the overall feel and tones of the image... nice work!

As for 1980, all I can say is...PARTY!!!!
