Thanks Graham. This is a lesson that I had to relearn. In my old B&W days a photo was always created as a reality unto itself. I don't know why I forgot that when it came to digital colour. Although exposure latitude is lacking, the digital capture has almost limitless ways to express its reality. It is a bit daunting - perhaps a little less so after this discussion. Eb

You sure did! Looks great. Warm and inviting. Now, don't you think that looks better? More 'real' instead of like a photograph? There's bonuses to being an insomniac you know :) I have a shoot in 4 hours and I'm *still* not tired....

For your purposes, Eb, that's all you need to know and PS Elements works just fine. You can actually separate every pixel if desired :) Yes, working from the original would produce better results. Remember, ALL cameras can only give a 'representation' of a scene as they have such a limited dynamic range (compared to our eyes) - the photographer has to alter the image post-shot to accurately illustrate the actual scene. This demo here shows this concenpt clearly I feel?

Can't argue much with the commercial results as it looks like a calendar shot. It would be even better if you were working from the full resolution, i.e the cloud would not have blocked up. I know very little about PS (Elements) other than basic tones, contrast and sharpening. Even the latter can be more involved than I care for. So, I am just feeling my way. I did not realize that you could separate the high / mid/ shadow layers. Eb

Here's the commercial version ........ see the difference? On this, I adjusted all three layers - shadows, highlights and midtones and changed the time of day back a few hours for clarity and depth in the sky.

Eb, the flotsam I removed. The wildlife I shot. Sorry - I had a clear shot :) Just a variation to give you some ideas. I spent YEARS (literally) learning how to critique my own images and it is VERY hard to do. I cover this in my new courses and show photographers how to go about 'maximizing' images, particularly for visual impact and commercial sale. If you're interested in selling some of your images, please visit my website as I am now accepting submissions for the stock library. My PS CS2 analyses of this image came up as 'perfect' by the way, so you go the tones, contrast and values spot on! I did darken the clouds for detail and made 100+ other little changes - I doubt you'd be able to see them, though. There's two main ways to exhibit this image - the way you had it which is "ooh", and the other which is "whoa!" Geddit? Now, which is which ....

Graham, thanks for touching up my photo. It looks like you removed some flotsam and possibly a few geese and ducks. Do anything else? I agree with the effectiveness, I just was not the one to do it! I still have old habits! Eb
