I stand corrected. It looks much better on my calibrated monitor at home!

I shoot nature so this is a little out of my league. You are right about the lighting - you couldn't have reduced the strobe output. It is exactly where it needs to be. Maybe it is the blond hair that almost gives it a bit of reflection that is throwing me off. I'm sure your full size image does this much more justice (obviously). Make no mistake - I love it and think she will too.

for real? you'd have a softer strobe? would you even be able to see it then? maybe the hair highlight because it's blond could use less, but the babe I think has just the right amount..

thanks for the comments :)

Like many of the others said...it's not a "perfect" shot. But so what. It is, however, a "Oh how cute" shot that I think she'll very much cherish. The strobe is a bit harsh... a softer light would look nice. It's not a natural position for the boy to really be I'm ok with that too. It couldn't have been easy to get him to do that but he seems quite content with his mommy and that's what this image portrays to me. As great as she looks, it's the boy that really draws me in to this.

thank you Gary! I think you got what I was trying to do. I never meant there to be interaction. I have those photos as well. I wanted to give her something that no one else would. I wanted a portrait that made contact with the viewer, hence the eye contact.

Just to add to my previous comment, mothers interact with their babies in many different ways, portraying only new mum joy and absolute love is not only unrealistic but also strikes me as having a pretty limited and stereotypical view of mothers..

I understand what Peta is saying but the reason I like this image so much is that first, it's not 'perfect' with her arm chopped, for example, and second, it's the antithesis of the standard formulaic mother and baby shots which the majority of professional studio photographers churn out by the thousand, which quite frankly are boring and impersonal (and probably wouldn't have had so many comments). You've achieved something different here, so good on you.
Regards, Gary

Wonderful capture Erwyn... she will keep this one in the first page of the album. Very nice work.

Hi Peta and Erwyn,
The way I see it is the lack of "vibe" is the "story" that the picture tells.
I can't explain it any better than that.

good critique. thank you... the cut off arm really doesn't bother me. but you have a good point on the hair in front of the eye.
As for the flat light... I was trying to create natural window light as that is what I always use... but it was too dark.

thanks again. I shall work on the image

Not trying to be critical, but this shot does deserve a bit more attention I think. The mother's front arm is cut off and the baby's foot is hidden/cut off by the sheet. I don't think the mother's hair crossing in front of the baby's closed eye helps the scene. Also the lighting is a bit flat, especially if you are using a strobe, and the overall shot is soft considering you are using the 50 1.4. The overall set up and idea is very good.

ok, so what you said kinda hurt, cause I thought I had done a good job at photographing something that I don't ever see.. but you've kind of put things into perspective for me. it was my first mother/baby shot ever... and will take a different approach if I ever get to try again. thank you for your feedback

Vibe? Thats the problem, there is none. It's just a model with no expression with a baby strangely placed on her back. Weird.

Even more of a reason to provide her with a special image which conveys her love and connection to the surviving bub. Fair enough with the teeth!

Hi Erwyn,
I agree almost completely with Peta's assessment of this shot. But, that doesn't make it a bad image by any means. On the contrary, what more could you ask for but for that detailed an interpretation? Some of us might not like what we see, but it is what it is.

Sorry to bud in here on this set of comments.
Peta,
I think that you picking up on that kind of vibe from this image is actually what makes the image outstanding.

not going to get too many smiles out of her.. she lost one of them. they were twins. Then the father cheated on her and left. She has a lot going on... that being said. i did get some happy photos.. but her teeth are pretty rough so she doesn't like to smile to start....

Just giving you my take on it. There's just none of that new mum joy and absolute love for her little baby here. The baby may as well not be there at all. Believe me, this genre is up my alley - but I am not looking for you to please me. You need to please your client first of all.

I'm sorry but this too much about the hot blonde and nothing about their connection either.

Oh, God, man, this is adorable. Who cares strobe or torch lights, when you caught THE moment?
