I agree with you Marcus. More specifically, there's no project for nature macro's. I dont think we should make it as narrow as birds of England - that would exclude a lot of people. What about Birds, Birds in flight, Animal interaction, Insects, Leaves of all colour and kind, Patterns in nature, Colours and Textures of nature, Elements of trees(leaves, branches, trunk, bark and roots), Magic of forests, Deserts, Along the shore, Rocks and rock patterns, Earth wind and fire, Environmental destruction/impacts etc. I think the potential list is endless. Just hope someone take notice. Kind regards - Joggie

I Think you have a good idea here. I really enjoy doing wildlife pictures. Flowers, birds, animals and insects make great subjects for pictures.

yes you are right I did correct myself somewhere down the line, to include nature pics of all forms, so we also can have specific projects... take care...

Hello All,
I have only been at this site for about a week and this is my first post in the forum. I would like to add a hearty salute to the idea of having some projects for wildlife photography. Wildlife photography is where my main interest lies and it does seem odd that with 50 some projects that there aren't any that are specifically focused upon nature photos.

I'm biased. Extremely so.
I'd call the category "Call of the Wild".
Could be wildlife or anything natural. Macros in the back yard to that summit on K2... The category would also allow the portrait folks to take it outdoors and get some interesting interactions.

That is the type of generic projects I am trying not to have to post under, A good Idea in some aspects, but I was thinking more projects in gereral towards Things that move. I agree that a waterfall or any outdoor shot is Nature but would fall under the landscape projects, Macros could probaly need a couple of specific projects. Anything Natural is too generic for me In MHO.....

I agree with Marcus - we need several, more specific projects. A single "call of the wild' or "anything natural" will only become a dustbin for the photos we cannot fit in the many other projects.

Marcus, I agree. The categories are very limited when it comes to our birding interests. How do you go about getting a category added? I'm all for it. Marilyn

Although I do agree that there aren't many projects for some of the great macro work being done here, perhaps another way to look at it is as a challenge to take macro photos that fit into the existing projects rather than taking the photo then trying to find a project it fits?

So what your saying is take a macro and turn it into a landscape, or portrait, or turn him over and make it a nude? why should we have to make our work fit other projects when we should have projects of our own, we all donated, we should have the same luxury that everyone else has, no one is asking the portrait or landscape shooters to fit there shots into a wildlife project.....

Sorry Marcus, I didn't intend to say you should be forced to do anything, I agreed with you that there should be more projects for this type of work.
However the way I see it is that there are two ways of taking photographs - you can be opportunistic and, using your eye for composition, take a photo as the image happens in front of you - or you can plan in your mind what the image is going to be and then set out to capture that image.
The former is what I tend to do but looking at some of the work here has inpired me to try the second method and see where it leads. I think by putting limitations on yourself to fit into a project it is an opportunity to challenge yourself and maybe improve your photography.
Taking the second approach there are certainly more than the two projects you mention, what about silhouettes of birds, an alternative view of a bug, a dramatic portrait of an animal, a blurry image of a bird catching its food, artifial lighting of your macros, animals taken at night, the wildlife around your home etc.
Actually thinking about it some more, there is a third way, and that is by manipulating an image or several images afterwards to create a new image entirely. There are probably others too.

I take pictures of birds In flight? I cant really set out and plan that exactly, Unless I shoot trained birds that will pose for me and do exactly what I say. I never put limitations on myself I shoot what I love to shoot. Shooting to fit a certian project or trying to follow the crowd is IMO limiting yourself.
Using your mentioned approach with the suggestions of Silhouettes of a bird, I did that one and didnt really like the photo as I felt the only reason I took it was to fit it into the current project and is not close to my style. as far as the other suggestions, IE: different view of a bug, how doest that make it fit into the current projects. A Dramatic portait of a animal? these are animals, should I get a bird to look sad or depressed while flying.
To me a picture of a blurry bird catching food is a mistake, and I have taken tons of them, they are not somthing to look at. The Idea behind nature photography is to go where you think you might find your subjects and shoot them with the best of your abilities, it is not something you can plan down to a T. Its pretty hard to use artifical lighting on a bird or animal that is 40 yards away or up in the sky. And there are no animals around my home unless you want to see a cat or dog, neither of which I would want to shoot and post that would be really boring and IMO very restricting.
Now manipulating a image in PS Is fun once in a while to get a certian look, but not to fit in a project, And many of our wildlife shooters are not PS experts or even close, how would that make a nature photo fit into a project?
you have some intresting ideas for a photographer that is searching for new ways and things to shoot, and different wast to do it, I have been through the portrait, landscape and almost all aspects of photography and I do what I do now as that is what I like to do. I am not going to change what I do or how I do it to fit a project when we should have projects already in place to suit every type of shooing there is. but I did like the effort you put into your post and some of the ideas my appeal to others. Just not to me.... Take Care...

Fair enough Marcus, I hope some new projects are created to meet the nature photographer's needs and I look forward to viewing your images in them. Cheers.

I sure would like to see some nature projects as that is mostly all I have to shoot in the rural area in which I live. "Images from the garden", which could include animals and plants. "Wild Wings" (butterflies, moths, birds) Just a couple of things that came to mind.

Yep. can't argue with that. If they only knew how difficult it is. Hey, people are easy. try to get a wild animal to take direction in the field. I have sat, plenty of times, in camo gear freezing my ars off all day and never got a shot... I think it is time the wildlife guys get there due... But please, if it is a zoo shot. please do tell.. they are too dam easy too... lol ;-)
Keep shooting dem birds marcus!!!
