Wondered if any of you are using a Canon 10D for your nature photos. I am considering a digital camera. Have always used film with the exception of an Olympus point and shoot of 1.3mgp when digitals first hit the market. Thought it was a nice toy to take little snapshots with but that was it for my foray into digital. I like a lot of the capabilities of this Canon 10D. I also like the Canon image stalizer lens. However, I cannot find a 10D to even play around with in this area. They are all sold out. So if any of you are using one I would appreciate your thoughts about it including the type of jobs you are using it for. Please don't hesitate to include any downfalls of the camera as you perceive them. Thanks, Jack

Jack, I use my 10D for most everything now. In the studio, on location, and for my own simple nature shots. It works wonders. I usually shoot high-res jpegs (for nature work) and they work well for me. I don't print bigger than 8x10 for myself. Although, you can go much bigger, I haven't had the need. I'm just getting back into shooting nature to put the "hobby" back into my life. The only thing I have to gripe about is noise. I have encountered this a few times. I am currently searching out decent software to combat this. Also, cold winter weather can affect the battery pretty quickly. If you are familiar with Canons products you will find this easy to use. I think that as the summer comes around you might see a price drop due to the arival of the MarkII. You know people using the 10D now will go after the 1Ds' as the 1Ds' users buy the new camera.....(food chain thing). Bottom line, I would say you would love it for nature work. I do take most images through PS7 to tweak them. Hope this helps. Good Luck! Bob

Hi Bob, Thanks for the help. I have not used Canon products before, always Nikon. However, after using a friends Canon equipment for a weekend I was impressed with the quality of the af lens both in speed and sound. I had the fortune to use an IS lens with which I shot some children playing at an ISO of 800. Quite impressive! This with a film slr.
You made a reference to noise. At what ISO are you encountering this problem and in which format, ie jpeg, tiff, etc.
I have considered waiting for the Nikon D70. That would save me the cost of buying lense's but having used Nikon's for years I know the capability of their lens and although they are superb I'm not sure the AF's are as good as the Canon's. All subjective, of course.
Thanks again for your input on this camera. Jack Jack

Hi Jack I have 2 of these and I'm really pleased with them. I'm a bit biased towards Canon although I don't think there is much to choose between them and Nikon really.
If you want to see some examples, I'm slowly uploading a pic a day from a recent trip to Africa. Take a quick look.
A lot were shot with a 70-200 f2.8 with IS. A great lens for helping composition when it's impossible to adjust your distance from the subject. Works well with a 2x converter as long as there is enough available light.
The magnifying effect of the CCD is really benefical in the field too. At 200mm with a 2x converter you're effectively using the 35mm equivilent of a 640mm f5.6 lens! Great for getting in close.
I've never had any major noise issues shooting below ISO800
Hope that all helps Tony

hello Jack I've been using Canon cameras for almost 30 years now and I got one of the first 10D that came to Denmark last April. I'm very satisfied with it - I already had a 35-105 mm from my non-digital Canon EOS and I bought a Sigma 50mm macro. I also got a Canon 75-300mm IS last October ( a great lens, but I still need to 'discover' it's full potential, it'll probably be easier now that spring is around). As I make a lot of macro photos I bought a Canon Ring Lite, but unfortunately it doesn't work with my Sigma, so now I'm waiting for a Canon 100mm macro that I ordered - and I'm looking very much forward to it. There will be a lot of experimenting with that, I'm sure :) Good luck with your new camera! Birthe

Hi Jack, I also have a canon 10D, got it at the end of Feb 04, so far I'm very pleased with it. I also got the Sigma 18-50 lens (only £100) & the Canon 100-400 L IS USM, they are also very good for the money. Only downside of kit: Canon lens is quite heavy & Camera is a little noiser than some. I also find that it is worth running the final images through CSPro to get the best results.

Jack, ever since my 10D I have not picked up the EOS 50. I use it for macro (with the 100mm macro lens) and it is perfect. I can preview the shot and then repeat it until I think I have what I want. Colour, saturation, contrast, etc can be altered later without the need to scan.I believe you can use it for whatever you need to as long as you have the appropriate lens (considering the 1.6 crop) especially for landscapes. It is a great camera. I only shoot RAW and find that noise is minimised, especially after you need to make digital adjustments. Jpegs are not as good if you need to work on the images and then re-save!

Hi, I've got the Canon 10D. Where is "this area" you are speaking of? Is there a nearby large city you can go to where the Canon 10D is rentable? That is what I started off doing, but then I'm in So. California so there are lots of pro shops to rent from. Yes, the Image Stablilizer is really convenient, and if you already have a good tripod or monopod that you are using regularly, it is an added bonus. I use the Canon 10D for weddings, portraits, location sittings at park and beach, as well as photo documentation of events. I find it a bit slow for low lighting/indoor sport/action-related shots without flash. Thus, I would recommend the higher-end bodies, and lenses with larger apertures (f2.8 or larger)for that particular useage... which are also more $$$. I've also found using lower priced, non-Canon brand lenses to be softer in focus than Canon lenses. I shoot raw or high quality jpegs 100ASA and they look great blown up to 20"x30" on mid-priced Canon lenses. I also notice other folks mentioning noise... If you are talking about the sound noise, the USM (ultrasonic lenses) are quiet and great for not startling animals in nature... Major downfalls: removing CF cards before turning off camera leads to corruption of digital files. But then that is the same with all digital cameras. Low/dead battery can cause loss of data. Again, this is the same with all digital cameras. So this means making sure your batteries are charged, having an extra charged battery and extra CF cards, too... More than anything else, converting over to digital takes time, money and resources to manage your files (Are you only going to shoot, put it on your computer and emailing it?), balancing the color of your camera to your monitor, and balancing the color on your printer, not to mention upgrading the computer.

hi jack, i bought the 10d 'bout a month ago. Since, i havent touched my eos1n barely. The 10D is a great camera, sharp, good colours and solid! It is slow in start-up (about 3sec, sounds not important but anoys the **** out of me when the camera has dozzed off and i need to be quick). Also when i do sports i have to grab my 1n. the eos 20D is much faster in any way, but feels like plastic, i would't trade. Overall, it's a perfect camera and i use it more then my 1n, a bit slow but that is something i can easily live without! Oh, never use it in 1600 iso, the noise is not to be believed! But in 100 iso and in raw it will blow your mind! good luck, reeves

Hi Jack. I must say first of all, that I love my 10D for landscape/nature. My portfolio is full of shots with this cam. I also post which lens I used with each photo. I am currently waiting on my new lens to arrive (300mm f/4 L IS), and I just can't wait to see the results of this paired up with my 10D. I will post some pics I shoot with it soon. Until then, check out some of my waterfalls in my portfolio. Regards, Darren
