  Q. F717 or C5050 - best in low light?

Asked by Stu Siegal    (K=3) on 6/15/2003
I've narowed down to these two, and wanted to know what people thought of the image quality from each in low light. The Sony has an 800 iso, as opposed to 400 on the Olympus, but the Olympus has a 1.8 lens. Any firsthand experience on either or both under these conditions appreciated. Links to shots would be great.

Thanks

Stu, I can't offer any firsthand experience but I can offer you my honest opinion. I was where you were a few weeks ago when I decided on the F717, which I purchased online yesterday and am waiting to arrive at my doorstep any day now.

Two of the F717's highlighted features are it's lens and low light capabilities. I have read that as far as image quality is concerned, it and the Nikon 5700 are the best for prosumers level cameras. I haven't read this for the Olympus models, though I'm sure they're great cameras. Sony traded off appearance for quality, I think, when they designed their F707 and F717 models and attached such a conspicuous but quality lens, which stops to 2.0. I personally don't think I would miss a faster lens such as is on the C5050, which is only a faster difference of .2. Also, the F717 has an exlusively developed NightShot and NightFrame technology, and all I've read and heard testify to its quality. If I were you, I would go with the Sony. Just my opinion.

Jim, thanks for the post. I've pretty much settled on the F717, nice to have my research confirmed. Good luck with your new one.

I think Sony F717 is the better choice - if you want to work in dark circumstances. It works great even in TOTAL DARK room. There is a hologram it projects to mesure the distance of the subject, and there is the "nightshot" feature for you ro see in total darkness. I had a Canon G3 before, I worked with Olympus E-10, but now I am the lucky owner of a Sony F717. It is the best of the thre, I'm sure.

Hello. I saw this forum and as a C-5050 user decided to post. I have tried many digital cameras, and can tell you that I absolutely love my C-5050. The low lighting and macro abilities it has will blow you out of the water. If you are interested in seeing several photos I have taken with my C-5050Z you may check them out at:

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me anytime for more low light stuff if you want - Matty11276@hvc.rr.com
