  Q. Long Exposures

Asked by Heidi Hart    (K=853) on 5/15/2003
I was wondering is there anyway to get a long exposure from a digital camera like I have seen others getting? I have seen some get 30 seconds or even 20 minutes, and the most I can hope to get is 4 seconds. I'm using an Olympus C-4000 Zoom if that will help in determining if I can get more. Thanks for any help.

According to Steve's Digicams http://www.steves-digicams.com/2002_reviews/c4000.html you should be able to choose shutter speeds up to 16 seconds. Perhaps it doesn't allow you to choose a longer exposure than 4 secs because of the aperture setting? Just a thought.

Thanks Matej, that helped me more than you will know!

Hi Heidi,
the Olympus C-4000 Zoom has a maximum exposure time of 16 sec, so nothing longer is possible for your. It should be somewere on the manual how to set the camera to a mode where 16 sec are possible.
If you need longer exposure times you need a different camera.
Best wishes,
tc

I saw a photo of a star trail done on digital....
now the relevent part to this is that he actually took about 200 shots and combined them in photoshop.
There was no noise at all and I was impressed.
So provided you can link the camera up to a laptop or rig something up similar you can expose for two hours too.

Tom thanks, I did manage to find the 16 seconds while using manual priority, and for now 16 seconds does me just fine. Maybe one day I will shoot for a film camera and try to hone my skills with one, but for now I like the ability to be able to trash the bad pictures without wasting money on film and developing.

Scott thanks for the tip, I may just give it a try sometime.
