  Q. Computer requirements?

Asked by Eric Mendoza    (K=1204) on 5/1/2003
I'm planning to digitize slides. I will get a Nikon
coolscan 4000, and a new Epson printer(2200). But my
computer is so slow, that i have to get a new one.
What computer requirement is needed for this kind of work.
I shoot mainly Provia 100 and 400F slides.

No matter what you shoot on, the requirements are usually the same. Getting something fast enough to run your image editing program should be good enough. If you run Photoshop, run a system with a bit more than Photoshop's minimum requirements. Definetly get a big hard drive... those scans can get huge.

Eric,

It's not CPU power as much as it's HD space. Anything over 700mhz will do fine but you will need a large hard drive for storage.

what processor do your computer use? i haven't upgraded my processor in 4 years. maximize the amount of ram on your computer (512 at least), get a faster video card, and a larger/faster harddrive will be adequate. everything works fine and quick on mine with the scanners, drives and printer hooked up. RAM is the way to go; luckily we don't need to focus much on processor speeds for photo editing.

even getting the software "memturbo" will help with defragging ram.

Hi Eric
Well, I tend to disagree with the comments stated so far. If you are planning on using photoshop filters, cropping, rotating etc. you may want to consider a fast processor. With PC's in the 2.5GHZ class with 120GB HD around 1'000USD, what's the point. Definitely don't go below 2GHZ. I agree with fast HD (above 7000 rmp) and lots of RAM (no more than 512MB though as Windows (even XP) does not use more than that). And get a huge screen, you'll love it. Cheers
Peter
