  Q. Image editing software --what do you use?

Asked by Mark Beltran    (K=32612) on 4/30/2003
What kind of image editing software do you use?
I was just curious about what everyone else uses, and why. I started out with PhotoImpact 4.2, and still use it to this day (upgraded to 6.0). It's what I became used to as far as navigating within it. I find it's fast, very simple for the beginner, has never crashed, and yet has the advanced features for further image manipulations. I've tried Photoshop, and have come to the conclusion that whatever you're most comfortable with is the best program. Any thoughts or comments about these and others?

I use Photoshop, MB. Until recently, the Photoshop Elements package, which is very affordable, seemed to fill all my needs, but I've upgraded to Photoshop 7.0.

Photoshop isn't the easiest program, but it's become nearly universal in hobbyist circles, and that offers certain advantages. As I've seen many doing, I often offer suggestions in my crits that include parameters for editing, such as, "try the Unsharp Mask at settings of 125/.95/240". Proving the point, Photoshop has become commonly accepted part of our language, as in "I photoshopped that image".

I have switched to Photoshop Elements 2 from MS Picture It Publisher. I liked Picture It but felt that Photoshop was the standard so I switched to the cheap one for now. One thing about Picture It was it had 6 CD's of clip art!!!

"I often offer suggestions in my crits that include parameters for editing, such as, try the Unsharp Mask at settings of 125/.95/240".

Wow, that would be disasterous. I meant to say, 125/1.0/0.

I am presently using Photoshop 6. There is a lot of support on the web. I have been teaching my self (trial & error) for the past two years. At first there was a lot of frustration, but now I have overcome that and am able to really use it as a tool. Yet, there are many of it's features that I have yet to tap into. Best Wisheds..Ed

I use Photoshop 7, it is great program and there is so good support in web.

I've used Photoshop since version 3.0. Although i'm pretty new to photography, i've done graphic design for many years. I now use Photoshop 7... if you're a pro, there is nothing that can come even close.

PS, what else is there !
wouldn't consider anything else.

I'm a Photoshop user. However, The Gimp is a pretty good free substitute. It lacks the sophisticated color management of Photoshop and works always in 8 bit mode (as of the last time I used it). Those are the reasons I use Photoshop, even though Photoshop in 16 bit mode is pretty feeble (no magic wand!).

I have Photoshop7, Corel Photo Paint11 and Paint Shop Pro7.
My favourite is Photoshop.
But Paint Shop Pro for is simplicity and for is value for money is the best choice.

I love my Corel Photo-Paint, despite Photoshop's popularity.

Just picking up Paint Shop Pro 8 from the Post Office this morning. I've used Photoshop LE, not enough undo power, Photoshop Elements, really quite good, but not enough prepress power, and Photoshop, too damn expensive.

The latest version of PSP looks to be the most intuitive yet with a vastly improved user manual, a feature often overlooked as secondary to the user experience but high on my list of wants.

PSP 8 is now available at http://www.jasc.com

I've been using Paint Shop Pro for a couple of years now and it has more than enough power for me. In fact, I've still not used a vast majority of it's features, which range from photo editing to creating digital art. Considering the price difference between Paint Shop Pro and PhotoShop, I'd recommend PSP as a bigger bang for your buck.

Photoshop.

John, what do you mean by "Photoshop Elements, really quite good, but not enough prepress power"? I'm not familiar with the term.

 John Charlton   (K=5595) - Comment Date 5/13/2003
Frank;

Unlike Photoshop, Photoshop LE and Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop Elements is unable to create CMYK seperation files, such as CMYK Tiffs commonly used by printing presses.

Betsy Hern, has written an article for Usefilm on the alchemy of prepress entitled, Chasing Color - Converting a Photo from RGB to CMYK for Print.

Check it out at http://www.usefilm.com/showarticle.php?id=48

By the way, Paint Shop Pro 8 is fantastic. Really!

John, thanks for the lesson on prepress and the pointer to Betsy's article.

Frank
