  Q. Canon PowerShot G3 Focus Issue

Asked by Brad Buskey    (K=419) on 4/30/2003
I just bought a Canon PowerShot (Brand New) and I am having issues with blurry images. I also have a Sony Mavica MVC-CD400, where I have never had an issue with blurry photographs.

Question is, how should I set the camera to get better focus?

Thanks in advanced.

The G3 has gotten good grades for clarity, and you're an experienced digital photographer, so the problem must be related to defect or settings. Maybe Sony has a higher default setting for in-camera sharpening or contrast. You might check for similar complaints on the dpreview Canon Talk Forum: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1010

The specs on the cd400 and g5, other than size, are about the same. Why have you decided to change models and brands?

 Brad Buskey   (K=419) - Comment Date 4/30/2003
I changed models because the Sony took too long to "boot up" I missed a lot of photos on my last vacation because there were times the camera too up to 1 minute between turning it on and when it was ready to shoot. Also, I was only sharing the camera with my parents, they actually own it.

I will play with the settings a bit more and try different techniques.

Thanks

From discussions I just reviewed in the Nikon Talk Forum, comparing the cp5700 and the f717, Sony's design approach includes a high degree of in-camera sharpening. If that appeals to you, you might experiment with increasing in-camera sharpening on your g3. From everything I've read, the g3 should produce excellent images.

Brad, you don't tell us what type of photos you experienced the blurred images, is it all your shots, macro, zoomed (digital or not). Without some idea of what you were trying to do it is difficult to guess what might be causing it.

I have a Canon PS30, and I had very great difficulty with macro imageswhere it tends to pick up the background when using AF mode. The MF is also quite difficult to get right.

But having experimented I've found the only time I get blurred images now is when I'm doing low light shots and I haven't bothered to setup the trypod. I still try and convince myself it will be ok if I jus hold my breathe whilst shooting ;-)

I take a very wide variety of images. Everything from indoor family gathering to outdoor, shootin the moon. I have gotten the blurred images mostly with hand-held indoor shots. But the same shots with the Sony were much clearer. With sunlight comming in the window, I don't use the internal flash (no flash at all.) I am currently looking for a good external bounce flash for the times I need the flash instead of using the internal flash.

I have read a few snippets in a couple books that have helped me get a better stance and holding of the camera. This seems to have made the most dramatic increase in sharpness. I am also going back over the manual and reading more into the settings, and I have been somewhat successfull in finding an all-around group of settings that are working nicely. I like the ability to save the settings in C1 or C2.

All my tripod shots are crisp and colorfull. I only ever use a tripod when doing macros, so I have not had any problem there.

I am starting to get the hang of the focus. I am going to try a few more things tonight, including RAW format, faster memory and a slightly higher exposure setting. I did get some nice shots last night at the Steamboat Race (part of the Kentucky Derby Festival)

Thanks everyone.

Here is an example of a good image, shot freehand with the G3. My goal in this image was to have both the mirror's image and the background (bushes) to be in focus. Only the mirror's housing is out of fucus (which is fine.) The background could be sharper, but to do that, the mirror's image would suffer.

I know the camera takes awesome shots. I just need to get the photographer in line to do so...

It seems that the reduction in size in the forums has degraded the image. Here is a link to the full size that I have posted here in my portfolio:

Thanks

Does anyone else have some ideas about this? I have started getting used to it now.
