  Q. Best Interpolation filter

Asked by Erol Erkmen    (K=325) on 2/15/2003
mostly pictures is lack of quality (from original). It is up to me this problem coming from interpolation filters.I'm using Lancos-3 for to shrink and Bi-Cubic for enlargement.Any idea ? ,it is very important.

Erol, I'm using Photoshop's bicubic interpolation program for both upsizing and downsizing, and am happy with the results. It's usually appropriate to re-sharpen after re-sizing, now matter what method you use. I just looked through your gallery, and don't see where you've had any problems. Your pictures appear to be of the highest quality, as would be expected from a cp990.

For PS try this, for downsizing.use bi-linear and decrease resulotion until according to the sizes to want.Resulotion for only printing jobs. For upsizing you must use only bicubic interpolation. No need sharpnes..I'm using Photo-Brush it has a lot of interpolation filters.

Great question. Using Paint Shop Pro, I have been applying bilinear interpolation for downsizing and am happy with the results. I use bicubic for upsizing, but find upsizing anything is a poor substitute for starting with a larger file.

I noticed in Photoshop that the bicubic method is the recommendation for going either up or down. That runs completely contrary to what Paint Shop Pro recommends.

I remain confused.

yes thats right, confused !.PS is very ,very good image interpolation program but some sections is very pooor. For that reason I'm trying several programs.I find Photo brush's(bi-linear 2pass) up and down re-sizeing facilities much better. Also photoCleaner very good for quick upsizing but I think best way decrease resulotion without interpolation filter.

I use Genuine Fractals for upsizing... it does a great job up to about 50% enlargement and an acceptable job upto 100% enlargement. I also use it for downsizing and have not had any issues. However, as stated before, it all depends on the amount of information available with the original image.
