  Q. How good is the flash on your digicam?

Asked by Uncle Frank    (K=1642) on 1/9/2003
The internal on the Nikon 995 is woefully inadequate for anything other than fill. The only way to keep my camera from being "daylight only" was to buy an external flash, which is a complicated process for a swivel camera. But after buying a bracket, hotshoe assemble, and a SB22s Speedlight, I found I had a steep learning curve ahead of me. Six months later, and I'm only beginning to get decent results.

I'd like to hear your experiences and techniques with flash photography.

Hey Unk,

Mine sucks (sony 707). I have purchased the external flash but have a lot to learn. Notsomuch about digital flash photography as much as lighting in general. I suspect that through continued experience and practice, as well as a few more purchases (softbox, bounces, etc) I will get better, but I have a long way to go.

Looks like you're doing quite well with the New Year photo. Looks like very planned lighting rather than just one flash.

Hi, Jim. Actually, I used two flashes for that shot - the external flash in bounce mode, and the internal flash for fill. It seems to give better results than just using the external flash.

The sony flash are terrible.
I have the 505v and its woefully inadequate. I'm saving up for a good external flash unit.

I have a Kodak DX4330, and have found that the flash can somtimes a hindrance. But I have discovered that it makes slightly shady outdoor pics come alive...

I have an Olympus C-4000 and although the slow flash's work ok, nothing to write home about, the fill flash sucks, especially when shooting people. It leaves all types of hair with the "Wet Head" look. I have yet to try it outside, and I truly hope that the effects would differ considerably.

Hello Frank,

I am using the Nikon CoolPix 990 and as good as the cam is - the built-in flash is crappy. The quatity of the lense is very good at dark conditions so I am trying to avoid shots with flash light. I never made a pic of a person whose eyes didn't come out red - even with the pre-flash which is only a little lamp.
My wife uses a Sony DSC-F7 and this built-in flash is much better.
Greetings from Juergen
