Q. best way to photograph aircraft

I have just got back from an RAF Conningsby where I had a go at getting some pics of the Euro Fighter.

i'm using a D50 with a 70-300mm lens

I have managed to get some (what i feel is) good pics, but these were all taken on either auto settings or sport mode and i was wondering if I could do better with Aperture or shutter mode instead.

Personally, I typically use full manual mode at airshows, often including manual focus.
Determine exposure on the grass next to the runway (which is roughly 16% grey equivalent), then set the shutter speed as high as you can get while keeping a decent DOF, for prop aircraft slower to get the propdisk to show.
Focus at a set distance, and take the shot when the target aircraft (formation) passes through that zone (having a decent DOF gives you margin of error of course).
With very large aircraft (transports, tankers, airliners) you can use AF, with smaller ones, especially fast moving jets, it can get difficult unless you have a professional body with f/2.8 AF-S lenses (the AF systems in your lens and body are likely too slow to give predictable results consistently for things like Eurofighter and Tornado).
