  Q. Lighthouses in Door County, Wisconsin

Asked by Mark Peterson    (K=3452) on 1/18/2003
I just returned from a long weekend in Door County Wisconsin. If you have never been there, I recommend to take the trip up there for the lighthouses. In the winter, like my trip, it isn't crowded and can be difficult to find a place to stay, so call ahead. We stayed in four of the Wagon Trail Resort Homes from Friday to Sunday. Very nice homes with plenty of room and in a beautiful area of Door County. All the small towns up there are ideal for the photographer. There is so much to see and take pictures of that I will be going back soon. I took photos of the lighthouses at Port Washington, Kewanee, Algoma, Sturgeon Bay,Cana Island, and Eagle Bluff. We also took photos of the cliffs along Lake Michigan and experimented with "star trails".

Mark, and others in the area, you might want to check out www.peninsulaartschool.com in Fish Creek in Door County, Wisconsin. They offer classes all year round on various art disciplines, including photography -- nature photography, portraits, philosophy of the photo, polaroid transfer, it changes. With your experience you could probably teach a weekend, or longer, class there and get to know the area even better. Simply stop in with your portfolio and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Very friendly people. I've attached a pic of the school which has been expanded, and is expanding even more. They are very nature-friendly and want to blend into the area. Lots of plantings, outside sculpture -- nothing garish, lots of wood and glass and natural building materials. They have an amazing gallery there open to the public that is worth viewing, not just local stuff. Check out their roster of teachers and you might be surprised.

Thanks, I have heard of the art school through members of the camera club I belong to. They all tell me about Dan Anderson's Winter in Door County Landscape course.
