  Q. Digital acceptance?
Mark  - MarkMedia -
Asked by Mark  - MarkMedia -   Donor  (K=1062) on 4/8/2002
I have made the transition from medium format "silver"
methods to digital. I have found that my 4.1 Meg-pix
camera, TIFF files, Photoshop, a good printer (& paper)
produce prints that amaze me. I was skeptical, and still
think that my Hasselblad will "do better" - but how much
better?...we must consider the point of diminishing return.
I show many people my digital 8 X 10 prints and they have
a hard time believing that they are "digital". I know
I will stir-up some purists out there, but the gap is
narrowing. Also, no film cost, no dev. costs, instant
previewing, no smelly fixer-fingers.....Im sold....!
However, one must have top of the line digital equipment.
A "real" glass lens (Sony, Olympus...), at least 4 Meg-pix,
a good printer/paper, and a good working knowledge of Photoshop. I was so skeptical, but am now comfortable.
I would be interested in hearing others "transition stories"!!
BTW - I use the Olympus E-10 and love it.

Mark

Mark, glad to hear you are happy with your new digital tools. I have been shooting 35mm since the Canon AE-1 was released (my first camera) in the late 1970s, and I have been shooting with the Canon D30 digital SLR since October of last year. Take a look at my website http://www.ag3photography.com for examples of my digital work. I use Photoshop 6 and the Epson 1280 printer with HW Matte and Premium Luster Photo Paper and I am very happy with the results. I hope this doesn't turn into another film v. digital debate! Good luck with your new tools.

Hi Mark - I've never owned a film camera, just jumped right into digital. I currently use the Minolta Dimage7 and love it. I have all of my prints for sale printed by one of two on-line print services, and am thrilled with the results. As in your case, unless I tell folks I shoot digital, they never guess...isnt it great? If you're interested in the print services I use let me know. - Beverly :-)

I shoot both a Nikon F4 and a Canon Powershot and love them both. I make digital scans from film on a Dimage film scanner and work with everything digitally. I've found a market (and a personal desire) to show more images in large scale (16x20, 20x24) and find a satisfactoy way using the sophisticated algorithems in nik-sharpen and S-Spline 2, which also lets me send 114MB files (largest I've done so far) to a lab like ImageExperts via FTP online transfer. Nope, I'll always have a film camera too, but I'm hooked. Spent 20 years in a dark and toxic lab and don't ever want to go back.
