  Photography Forum: Digital Darkroom Forum:
  Q. New member intro & categorised links (note: long post)

Asked by Stephen Marsh    (K=60) on 1/16/2002
Greetings USEFILM 'Digital Darkroom' members, I am starting a new thread to introduce myself and to share some links to further reading.

My name is Stephen Marsh and I have been involved in reprographics since 1988. Based in Sydney, Australia - my professional experience has been in type/layout and prepress/repro in different areas of the design, prepress and print sectors. I hope to share my experience and thoughts on Mac/PC Photoshop use, prepress and print - and in the process learn more on photography and digital image processing. I will be contributing some articles to this site on using Photoshop for image correction and associated tasks, so please reply to the previous thread posted by Nanette so that contributing authors can target articles to the audience. I will also contribute to the Digital Darkroom forum to answer any questions on my articles and to help with other posts where able and expand my knowledge on photography from the photographers viewpoint - which is often different to my own.

There are three authors who have written 'bibles' in their respective fields, which will be of interest to most users of the Digital Darkroom. I have no association with these authors or publishers, just boundless respect and admiration for their knowledge and work.

Photoshop, Photography:

- Martin Evening, author of Adobe Photoshop 6 for Photographers

http://www.evening.demon.co.uk/photoshp.html

Photoshop, Colour Theory/Correction:

- Dan Margulis, author of Professional Photoshop 6 'the classic guide to color correction'

http://www.ledet.com/margulis/articles.html

Photoshop, Restoration/Retouching:

- Katrin Eismann, author of Photoshop Restoration and Retouching

http://www.photoshopdiva.com/books.html

Since there has been some great input on desired articles so far, I would like to add some links to further exploration - as these links are gold. The URL's listed below may appear as 'broken' links in some cases, if this is so please copy and paste the link to your browser instead of clicking the broken link. Also explore these sites to see what else is on offer. Sorry if any links are out of date:

Shooting B&W or Converting Colour Film:

For the intuitivly creative, free Apple QuickTime for Mac/PC required to view this movie (this is perhaps the fastest way to achieve the 'best' results - although I would use a monochromatic channel mixer instead of desaturate as suggested in this technique, but this is semantics when compared to the actual techniqe, which is so 'obvious' it is often missed):

That's it - enjoy!

P.S. - Sorry for the lack of paragraph returns in this post which makes it confusing, there must be a glitch somewhere (I did put them in).

Regards,

Stephen Marsh.

What a ton of great information. Thank you. Unfortunately, the copy and paste function does not work on this site. Oh well. Guess we'll all have to type in those URLs manually.

while the right click: copy/paste functions are disabled here.. you can still select the link and hit CTRL-C to copy it to your clipboard, and then paste it with CTRL-V into the browser's URL address line.

If Windows is your OS and IE your browser (don't know about Netscape) clicking the right mouse button on a web page can ALWAYS be replaced by SHIFT-F10 combination. Like to get the context menu for an image, hover your mouse over the image and hit SHIFT-F10, often the menu does not open just under the mouse, but it will be somewhere on the page. Same thing if you want to open a link in a new window, hover over the link and hit SHIFT-F10 instead of the right mouse button.

Gee, I don't have any problem copying the link in the usual way. I use IE 6, and I right-click on the left hand side of the link. Still holding the right-click down, I sweep the mouse to the end of the link so the whole address is highlighted. Then I go to the upper toolbar and click edit, copy, to copy it to my clipboard. then I click on the address bar and click paste to copy the link to the address bar. Then , and you're done.
