  Q. Printers

Asked by Kevin Dean    (K=438) on 3/3/2004
I am in the market for a new printer exclusively for photo printing, and mainly in B/W, I would also like the option of A3 paper. so what should I be looking at?

You have some options and some questions to ask yourself. What are you printing for? Final prints or proofs?

Canon has the i9100, which is a fantastic dye-based printer. Epson has their 2200, which is a fantastic pigment-based printer. Pigments will last longer, won't fade as quickly, and can generally be sold as final prints. But it comes at a premium. Dyes will fade more quickly, but generally look better than pigments.

There are a few threads here that go into the differences more. Do a search on "Epson 2200" and you're sure to turn up lots of information.

After trawling the web, it would seem that this printer is not sold in the UK, although I await to be proven wrong, there are however a 2100, a 2000p, and a 1290, all do A3 printing, but which is best, and what about HP, or Canon?

The 2100 and 2200 are the same printer, different numbers
for Europe and the USA. If you plan on printing B&W 100%
of the time I would go with the 1280/1290 and MIS inks.
If you need to retain color then replace the Epson black
with MIS eboni and print in the black only mode, works great.

kevin,
I use the epson 2200 professionally, and have had great results. However, if your looking for top quality black and white, you may want to also invest in a program called Piezography. It produces the truest black and white available in digital format. The program is available for sale online, and the inks just became available for epson 2200 (I have not tried it yet), and from all I have read it looks amazing. Check it out at www.piezography.com. Good luck!
Melissa
