Well, I don't have any experience with third party inks, but I have been researching Lyson inks. They make a wider variety of inks targetted for specific jobs. If nothing else, it makes for fun reading http://www.lyson.com/includes/frames.html
And, according to Wilhelm research (those nice guys that tell us just how good inks really are) Lyson is rated right at the top for clarity, color fidelity, and longevity.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Ray. I appreciate your reply. The Lyson inks look interesting. I just don't want to mess up the printer by using non-Epson inks, but if there is no risk to the printer, I'm game to try other inks. I'll check out that link. Thanks.

Mary Sue, I have been using MIS color Archival inks, with a continuous feed system, on my Epson 1270 for about 1.5 years now. Never a problem, clogging or whatever. The colors are very similar to Epson's inks, following simple adjustments to the color slide levers, nothing complicated. The price is very reasonable, the system is easy to install. Even if you don't want to use the CFS, they also sell cartridges at good prices.
Look them over at http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/main2.html .
